Aggiungi al carrelloFolio (38 x 27 cm.). 87, (1) S. mit teils ganzs. Duotone-Abbildungen und teils farbigen Illustrationen. Illustr. Orig.-Leinenband mit Deckelbild und Deckeltitel auf rotem Seidenband. Parr/Lundgren, The Chinese Photobook 60. - "Ellen Thorbecke (née Kolban, and also known as Ellen Catleen) was already established as a freelance journalist in Berlin before she moved to China in 1930 with her new husband, Willem Thorbecke, the Dutch ambassador to China. All four of the titles collected here feature a lively, whimsical collaboration between Ellen Thorbecke as photographer and Friedrich H. Schiff, an Austrian caricaturist who arrived in Shanghai about 1928. The weave of photography and illustration is played out in Schiff's drawings, accompanying or often, in later titles, superimposed upon or continuing the line of Thorbecke's photos. The handwritten titles, dramatic collaging, and highly graphic arrangement and use of photographs highlight the collaborative and inventive approach to the layout of each book. Each book also includes texts, both informative and fanciful; taken together, these titles offer unique insight into an expatriate's perspective on life in China's major cities during the 1930s. In Peking Studies, Thorbecke's photographs and Schiff's sketches combine to create a charming and memorable, albeit selective, visual record of interwar Beijing. The book is an account, totally imagined, of a tour-a tour de force, in fact-of the city by the stout Chinese Mr. Wu and the lanky European Mr. Pim, both inventions of the authors. Wu and Pim appear on the cover and throughout the book in drawings: Wu with a folding fan, Pim in a white suit and hat, with a camera. The book is a montage of photos, drawings, collages, text, labels, and black, white, and red colorings; the text includes a bit of social history as well. A fullpage colered map of Beijing (Peking) shows a yellowheaded Wu pointing out to a red-faced Pim some of the famous sights of the city" (Martin Parr). - Deckel leicht angestaubt, sehr gutes sauberes Exemplar. - Illustrated original cloth binding with an illustration on the cover and the title on a red silk ribbon. - The cover is slightly dusty, but it is a very good, clean copy. First Edition. First edition, folio, pp. 87, [1]; photogravure illustrations throughout "taken by the Rolleiflex camera"; original cream cloth with red cloth title label and pictorial pastedown; boards soiled, otherwise a very good, sound and clean copy. Stunning photographs by Catleen, the wife of the former Dutch diplomat, Willem Thorbecke. Born Ellen Kolban (1902-1973) she "occupies a unique and forgotten position in the photography world. In 1931 she left Berlin for Beijing. For this trip she bought her first camera. Thorbecke developed into a compelling photographer who provided her photos with engaged observations about the people and places she visited. She made reports in a lively candid style with an eye for the vitality of street life and has produced several photo books including Peking Studies (1934) and People in China (1935)" (Photography in China). The photographs show various aspects of everyday life in the city. Schiff's thumb-nail sketches relate a narrative in pictures of Mr Pim and Mr Wu as they observe goings-on in Peking. A fine collaboration between the Dutch author-photographer and Friedrich Schiff (1908-1968) who was born in Austria and came to China in 1930 where he worked as caricaturist for several newspapers and illustrated books. Ellen Thorbecke, who is using her first married name here (Catleen), after a messy divorce became the wife of the Dutch ambassador to China, and wrote a few books on Shanghai and other Chinese cities, all splendid book productions.

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst and only edition. Numerous photographic illustrations and sketches (partly in colour). Folio. Original cloth, a very good copy. 87pp. Shanghai, Kelly & Walsh, A rare Kelly & Walsh imprint and one of the most evocatively illustrated books of the period. The work follows Mr. Pim and Mr. Wu on their perambulations through Peking and it's surroundings. The mixture of excellent photography with sketches by the caricaturist Schiff makes for a thoroughly enjoyable item. Friedrich Schiff (1908-1968) was born in Austria and came to China at the age of twenty-two. Here he worked as charicaturist for several newspapers, designed postcards, illustrated books, and even painted murals in public buildings and clubs in Shanghai. The Historical Museum in Vienna devoted a small exhibition to Schiff in March 2002. Catleen was Ellen Thorbecke's (1902-1973) maiden name. She married the Dutch ambassador to China Willem Thorbecke in the early 30s.
