Hardcover. Condizione: Like New. First Edition. Hardback book in nearly new condition: firm and square with strong joints. Just a few hardly noticeable rubs or very mild bumps. Hence a non-text page shows a small 'damaged' stamp. Despite such this book looks and feels unread. Thus the contents are crisp, fresh and tight. And so a very nice book in great condition, now offered for sale at a reasonable price.…

Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. From deep ocean trenches and the geographical poles to outer space, organisms can be found living in remarkably extreme conditions. This book provides a captivating account of these systems and their extraordinary inhabitants, 'extremophiles'. A diverse, multidisciplinary group of experts discuss responses and adaptations to change; biodiversity, bioenergetic processes, and biotic and abiotic interactions; polar environments; and life and habitability, including searching for biosignatures in the extraterrestrial environment. The editors emphasize that understanding these systems is important for increasing our knowledge and utilizing their potential, but this remains an understudied area. Given the threat to these environments and their biota caused by climate change and human impact, this timely book also addresses the urgency to document these systems. It will help graduate students and researchers in conservation, marine biology, evolutionary biology, environmental change and astrobiology better understand how life exists in these environments and their susceptibility or resilience to change. From the geographical poles to outer space, this book provides a multidisciplinary account of the adaptations and responses of biota living in extreme environments, and these systems' susceptibility and resilience to change. A must-read for graduate students and researchers in conservation, marine biology, evolutionary biology, and astrobiology. Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Recent studies on extremophiles have focused on thermophiles, microbes that thrive in high temperatures, while psychrophiles, which prefer cold environments, have received less attention. However, interest in cold-adapted microbes, especially those in polar regions, has increased significantly in recent decades. Given that much of Earths biosphere remains below 50C, psychrophiles likely outnumber thermophiles. Oceans, covering over 75% of the planet, maintain deep water temperatures between 240C. Antarctica offers both terrestrial and aquatic cold habitats, including ice that melts seasonally. Other cold ecosystems include permafrost, alpine soils, cold deserts, marine sediments, glaciers, and sea ice. This book explores microbial diversity and adaptation in extreme polar environments, emphasizing their potential for biotechnological applications. It presents a comprehensive overview of molecular diversity and genetic adaptations in cold-loving microorganisms. The chapters detail representative microbial groups, their habitats, and survival strategies in frigid conditions. It is designed for scientists interested in how life persists in extreme cold.To survive in such harsh climates, polar microbes have evolved specific regulatory mechanisms to respond to environmental stressors. Over the past decade, research has uncovered microbial responses to anthropogenic challenges like UV-B radiation, nutrient scarcity, desiccation, heavy metals, and temperature extremes. These studies have provided the basis for understanding gene regulatory pathways involved in morphological, physiological, and metabolic adaptations.Despite advances, the molecular diversity and adaptation mechanisms of polar microbes remain poorly studied. Research is dispersed, and there is a need for a unified resource. This book aims to fill that gap by offering a complete, up-to-date atlas of microbial life in polar regions, highlighting their unique adaptations and potential for future scientific and industrial exploration. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The International Conference on Quark Nuclear Physics 2002 (QNP2002) was held in the Forschungszentrum Jiilich from June 9 to 14, 2002. It was organized by the Institute of Nuclear Physics (IKP) at the Forschungszentrum Jiilich, together with the Universities of Bonn und Mainz. This meeting takes place every two years, and was the successor to QNP2000 which was held in Adelaide. QNP2002 brought together about 200 scientists from 25 countries who met for their scientific work in the Forschungszentrum, but spent their free time in the medieval city of Aachen, the former capital of Charles the Great. The particular feature of this conference is that it provides a comprehensive overview of the at tempts in understanding hadrons and nuclei, including dense matter, in terms of their fundamental constituents, the quarks and the gluons. One of the basic themes of the program was that fact that we do have an underlying theory of strongly interacting particles, namely the QCD. For that rea son, the experimental topics covered during the meeting ranged from precision measurements with hadronic and electromagnetic probes to ultra-relativistic heavy-ion reactions. Correspondingly, the theoretical topics spanned an equally wide range, including perturbative and lattice QCD calcu lations as well as effective theories and QCD motivated quark models. In the morning sessions invited reviews were given. In the afternoon twelve topical parallel sessions, directed by conveners, summarized the newest research results.…
