If we are to believe them, for Socrates virtue equals science. A man is courageous when he knows what to fear and not to fear; self-control or moderation consists in the knowledge of the exact extent to which a man ought to follow or to resist his inclinations, and so on. He who knows about these or similar norms, or, to put it even more radically, he who is able to express, in a definition, the real nature of virtue in general, or of a particular virtue, has all that it takes to be a virtuous man. Moreover, such a person cannot do wrong; the right way of acting follows necessarily upon the right way of thinking. That is why Socrates conceptions are considered utterly paradoxical. In order to attenuate this paradox, the historians occasionally refer to an intellectualistic trend in archaic Greek ethics; they insist especially, however, on Socrates exceptionally strong moral personality: for his|righteous mind it was inconceivable that somebody should know the good and not do it. Il veut simplement montrer sur un exemple concret comment chez Platon le philosophe et lartiste sont indissociables. Nous allons, très modestement, parcourir un des plus brefs parmi les dialogues de Platon dans lespoir que, par lui-même, il exercera son charme sur le lecteur et révélera quelque chose de lexceptionnelle grandeur de lartiste quest Platon. Cette grandeur réside avant tout dans une extrême simplicité. Les moyens mis en ½uvre sont des plus élémentaires, et pourtant lauteur arrive à nous envoûter, au point que nous ne songeons plus ni à lui ni à nous-mêmes, mais uniquement à ce Socrate qui, en toute bonhomie et cordialité, converse sous nos yeux avec son ami Criton. Nous navons plus dattention que pour cet homme étonnant qui telle est la conviction de Platon nous a montré par sa parole et par sa conduite, et tout spécialement dans sa mort, le chemin de la vie authentique, la seule qui mérite vraiment dêtre vécue et qui corresponde à la dignité de lhomme. Ce retard est dû pour une part à des circonstances personnelles, pour une autre à la variété et à la difficulté intrinsèque des problèmes traités et au fait que, dans le vaste travail de M. Gaiser, le bon et le moins bon sont inextricablement mêlés. Nous esquisserons dabord léconomie générale du volume et essaierons ensuite dapprécier la valeur des diverses parties dont il se compose. Une introduction de 38 pages (auxquelles sajoutent, pour les notes, les pp. 335-344) expose le but poursuivi dans louvrage et en situe les conclusions par rapport aux résultats acquis jusquici. Suit une première partie, intitulée « Mathematik und Ontologie» (pp. 39-202 ; notes : pp. 344-391) ; quelle soit la plus importante aux yeux de lauteur résulte à la fois de son ampleur et du fait quelle correspond seule au titre donné à lensemble ; il y est surtout question des principes derniers de la réalité tels que Platon les avait décrits dans ses conférences orales. La seconde partie traite des rapports entre lhistoire humaine et cosmique et lontologie ainsi décrite (203-290 ; notes : 391-416). La troisième est assez brève ; elle concerne le rôle de Platon dans le développement de la pensée scientifique (291-332 ; notes : 416-439). Un appendice très étendu (441-558) groupe, sous le titre de Testimonia platonica, les textes antiques qui, de près ou de loin, touchent à lenseignement oral de Platon, à lexception de ceux qui font partie du corpus platonicum. Le volume se clôt par des index. On aura remarqué que, sauf dans lappendice, les notes ne se trouvent pas au bas des pages, mais sont groupées à la suite de la IIIe partie ; cette disposition contribue à dégager lessentiel de la pensée de lauteur. Lexposé est bien divisé, la présentation matérielle dune haute tenue, la correction typographique presque impeccable (il y a quelques fautes dans les Testimonia.) Otto Lendle a fait paraître un volume de xix-309 pages et 6… dépliants consacré au Panégyrique de saint Étienne le Protomartyr de Grégoire de Nysse. Outre la préface, louvrage comporte deux parties ; la première contient lédition critique avec une traduction allemande en regard et compte 42 pages; la seconde, beaucoup plus étendue (pp. 49-292), est intitulée Bestand und Geschichte der Überlieferung. Elle souvre par dimportantes considérations méthodologiques sur la technique de lédition (pp. 49-98) et tout dabord sur la manière de collationner (pp. 49-61). Comme lauteur le fait remarquer à juste titre, des trois méthodes décrites il y a soixante ans par Otto Stählin aucune nest applicable dans la pratique dès que le nombre des témoins dépasse la dizaine. Auf der einen Seite steht der ewige Frager, der mit unablässiger Hartnäckigkeit und vornehmer, obwohl ironischer Bescheidenheit auf klare Antworten drängt; auf der anderen ein Mann voll Selbstzufriedenheit und Prätention, erst gutmütig, optimistisch und herablassend, bald aber, wenn er in Schwierigkeiten gerät, mürrisch, verstimmt, gereizt. Dieser zweite Dialogpartner trägt viele Namen: Hippias, Protagoras, Gorgias, Thrasymachos, Polos, Kallikles, Kritias, Euthydemos, Dionysodoros; jeder hat seine individuellen Züge, die Platon uns in seinen herrlichen philosophischen Lustspielen vorzeichnet. Nun könnten wir vielleicht meinen, sie dienten nur als Folie, um die Persönlichkeit des Sokrates in einem stärkeren Relief hervortreten zu lassen. Ganz unrichtig ist dies nicht; aber Platon hat mehr beabsichtigt: eine Kontrastierung nämlich nicht nur der Charaktere, sondern zugleich der Lebenshaltungen, besser: der Lebensanschauungen.
