The author develops a principle connecting the muscular structure of the head to the location and size of brain areas and subsequently to specific human behaviors and mental capacities. Beginnin…g with the basic premise that physical form dictates mental capacity, the author traces the evolution of brain and mind from a common spinal tract. It is argued that not only have brain structures always been dependent on pre-existing cranial muscle development for their location and physical form but that these same muscles, through vaso-motor control, act as keys for calling the evolved dependent brain areas into play. The book draws on the work of brain experimentalists, in particular the work of Gall, and corrects some of their conclusions with fresh observations. It further draws on the fields of comparative anatomy, sense physiology, and psychology both empirical and scientific. The author draws on animal studies, observations of human behavior, and comparisons between normal and abnormal character structures to vividly illustrate the ideas presented. The book argues that the development of the brain and its mental capacities are, first and foremost, a result of our animal origins. It places human mentality within the broader context of animal behavior and the human mind within the broader context of animal brains and evolutionary history. The book tackles some of the largest questions regarding the evolution of the human mind and provides a new framework for understanding not just human emotion but the fullness of human thought and action.
