It is debated who was the original author of this work, though it is often attributed to Sir Thomas de Ercildoun. Edited from the Auchinleck Manuscript in the national Library of Scotland by Sir Walter Scott. Walter Scott is best known for his historical novels and poems, including 'Waverley', 'Ivanhoe', and 'The Lady of the Lake'. 'The Lay of the Last Minstrel' was the first poem of his that brought him into the spotlight of the public's eye, establishing him as one of the most popular writers of his time.
