Sometimes, looking at its pages is like peering through shattered glass; often, at other times, it is akin to squinting through the darkness of a new dawn. Confused eyes, so long retired to the past, will be unprepared for things that, to them, appear unnatural-Black astronauts, symphony conductors, nuns, cowboys, and college students singing hope and promise with their eyes. With deep thought and imagination, this rare assemblage of photographers picked their stations inside and outside the shadows to give us a vision, that is not really a vision, but a revealing fretwork of Black American life. They strayed into joyful and sorrowed places; into holy places where people praise God; into the privacy of homes; into grief-hung prisons; and into hamlets that exist only on maps. An aged lady's face is there, saying what her lips have left unsaid. The sad eyes of a little girl, lifted toward the lens for a second, reflect the stars on our country's flag, while seeming also to reflect the darkness of the morning wrapped around her. Two children -one Black, one White-hold hands as they swing together. In the innocence of their youth, the air of racial difference loosens as they swing. Looking at them one has the feeling that perhaps America's air is blowing fresher; that at last American hearts are undergoing a needful dusting. In many ways this is happening. And no other art form has more diligently recorded our painful metamorphosis than the camera. In the proper hands, it burrows deep into feelings of human beings and into the true nature of their conditions. ISBN 0316109819 Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 1550 Mit zahlr. Abb.
