Campbell, senior minister of the church, tells in this book why he believes that evangelical Christianity, thrust unavoidably into the current American revolution, has resources not only to participate in the revolution, but the responsibility to shape and direct it. We are living in the time of Christian secularity, says the author. who believes that the church in the U.S. is in grave danger of coming apart on the question of whether the gospel is personal or social. Dr. Campbell takes the Bible seriously and criticizes church activists for their insensitivity to the vertical dimension of belief in Jesus Christ as a vital, saving presence in people s lives. On the other hand, he contends that evangelicals in this country have limited the gospel and hindered its acceptance by refusing to be concerned with political and social justice. He deals respectfully with the widely held position that the church receives no mandate from the New Testament to involve itself with such questions, and points out that this attitude rises in large part from a failure to take the Old Testament seriously.
