The 52 page novella is followed by 7 pages of publisher's adverts and additional stories including Paris in Pommern, by Louis Angely a vaudeville farce in one act originally published in 1840, and many poems. Der Besuch im Carcer" is a humorous novella by German author Ernst Eckstein, first published in the late 19th century. The story centers on Dr. Samuel Heinzerling, a school director, and his interactions with a mischievous student named Wilhelm Rumpf. When Dr. Heinzerling sentences Rumpf to detention in the school's "Carcer," or confinement room, Rumpf cleverly manages to lock the director inside instead. This turn of events leads to a satirical exploration of authority, punishment, and the absurdities of academic life. "Der Besuch im Carcer" remains a notable example of German humorous literature, offering insight into 19th-century educational practices and societal norms through its satirical narrative. Die von Eckstein in seiner Funktion als Kassirer des "Allgemeinen Deutschen Schriftsteller-Verbandes" eh. unterschriebene Quittung lautet auf den Landwirt und Agronom Wilhelm (Philipp) Ritter von Hamm (1820-1880), der seit 1847 die 'Agronomische Zeitung' redigiert und von 1851-64 eine von ihm gegründete Fabrik für landwirtschaftliche Maschinen bei Leipzig geleitet hatte, 1867 nach Wien gekommen und im Jahr darauf in das soeben gegründete Ackerbauministerium eingetreten war und von 1868 an die Landwirtschaftszeitung der 'Neuen Freien Presse' redigiert hatte. - Eckstein war seit 1872 Mitarbeiter der 'Neuen Freien Presse'. Einem größeren Publikum wurde er insbesondere durch seine Gymnasialhumoresken (wie 'Besuch im Karzer', 1875) bekannt; in seinen letzten Lebensjahren wandte er sich verstärkt mit sozialkritischen Romanen wie 'Familie Hartmann' (1894) der literarischen Moderne zu. Als freier Schriftsteller berichtete Eckstein über Reisen in West- und Südeuropa, bevor er 1872 Mitarbeiter der "Neuen Freien Presse" in Wien wurde. Einem größeren Publikum bekannt wurde Eckst…ein - der in der Nachfolge des Schriftstellers und Ägyptologen Georg Moritz Ebers (1837-1898) komische Epen und historische Romane verfaßte - durch seine Gymnasialhumoresken (wie "Besuch im Karzer", 1875); in seinen letzten Lebensjahren wandte er sich verstärkt mit sozialkritischen Romanen wie "Familie Hartmann" (1894) der literarischen Moderne zu.
