Sehr guter Zustand. - Geleitwort: Als ich im Sommer 1959 Hans Robert Reimer in Berlin aufsuchte, um von der Weidmannschen Verlagsbuchhandlung die ersten Lizenzen für den Georg Olms Verlag zu erwerben, ahnte ich nicht, was mir diese Begegnung eines Tages bedeuten würde. Ich hatte damals gerade den Herren vom Walter de Gruyter Verlag meine Aufwartung gemacht, und die gleiche Bewunderung, ja, die gleiche Ehrfurcht, die ich dort empfunden hatte, bewegte mich bei meinem Besuch im Hause Weidmann. Ich fand Hans Robert Reimer verzagt und euphorisch zugleich. Verzagt, was die Zukunft der Weidmannschen Verlagsbuchhandlung auf deutschem Boden anging, euphorisch wegen seiner Pläne im Ausland, insbesondere dank seines in Irland florierenden Textilunternehmens. Er achtete meine ehrgeizigen Pläne, machte aber kein Hehl aus seiner Skepsis: Heutzutage einen Wissenschaftsverlag ins Leben zu rufen, das ist ein hartes Brot. Ich kann davor nur warnen, und wenn nicht die Bürde des großen alten Verlages auf meinen Schultern lastete, ich würde mich ausschließlich Erfolgversprechenderem widmen. Ich nahm das ganze damals als Zeichen der Resignation und zugleich als gutgemeinten Rat, nicht mit allzu heißem Herzen nach den Sternen zu greifen. Es war mir unverständlich, daß sich jemand über viele Jahre hinweg dem Buche hatte widmen können, ohne ihm zugleich voll und ganz verfallen zu sein, noch dazu hineingeboren in diesen anspruchsvollen Rahmen. Nun, die Reimer-sche Fabrik in Irland ist schon längst nicht mehr, wohl aber die Weidmannsche Verlagsbuchhandlung. Fast 25 Jahre sind inzwischen vergangen, das Schicksal hat es mit der Weidmannschen Verlagsbuchhandlung unter Hans Robert Reimer nicht sonderlich gut gemeint. Die Veröffentlichungen der .Monumenta Germaniae Historica sind dem Verlag verloren gegangen, neue verlegerische Initiativen wurden nicht entwickelt. Der Georg Olms Verlag hatte damals 19 5 9 gerade seine ersten fünf Bücher vorgelegt, und inzwischen ist dank mancher Neuauflagen, auch aus dem Programm der Weidmannschen Verlagsbuchhandlung, ein stattlicher Katalog entstanden, insbesondere mit Titeln aus den Gebieten, auf denen Weidmann einst führend war. Zum Georg Olms Verlag paßt die Weidmannsche Verlagsbuchhandlung wie nach Maß. So schrieb W. Joachim Frey bürg, Verlagsleiter und Mitinhaber bei Weidmann in den letzten Kriegsjahren bis 1952, im Herbst 1983 für das Börsenblatt für den Deutschen Buchhandel. Ihm ist es wesentlich zu verdanken, daß die Geschicke der Weidmannschen Verlagsbuchhandlung von der Witwe Hans Robert Reimers, Alice Reimer-Stock, in meine Hände gelegt wurden. Ich hoffe zuversichtlich, daß es mir gelingt, mit Hilfe meiner Söhne und meiner Mitarbeiter, allen voran Dr. Eberhard Mertens, sowie dem Wissenschaftlichen Beirat, dem W. Joachim Freyburg, Dr. Hans Constantin Faußner und Professor Gert Preiser angehören, die Zukunft der Weidmannschen Verlagsbuchhandlung wieder erfolgreicher zu gestalten durch neue Editionen und durch die Veröffentlichung vieler bedeutsamer Werke des alten Programms. Unsere Reverenz gegenüber dem großen Erbe wollen wir auch durch diese Neuausgabe der Festschrift von Ernst Vollert zum 250. Jubiläum 1930 bekunden; ihr hat W. Joachim Freyburg eine wichtige Ergänzung für die letzten Jahrzehnte angefügt. Unsere Pläne müssen in schwieriger, schnellebiger Zeit verwirklicht werden. Weltweit rangieren Naturwissenschaften und Technik vor den Geisteswissenschaften. Was bedeuten heutzutage für viele denn schon Geschichte, Alte und Neuere Philologie, wen kümmert noch die humanistische Bildung, wer weiß um die geistigen Grundlagen der europäischen Kultur? Nur langsam setzt sich die Erkenntnis durch, daß die gegenwärtige Krise eine Krise des Geistes ist. Ich bin überzeugt, eine Rückbesinnung wird einsetzen, und ich bin ebenso überzeugt, das Buch und nicht nur das Buch als Arbeitsinstrument für den Geisteswissenschaftler wird auch in Zukunft anderen Medien überlegen sein, allem Fortschrittsglauben und allen Unkenrufen zum Trotz.
