Not dated but likely to be early 1940's: 8 vo. , Paper covered illustrated boards, maroon cloth spine, the front illustration shows a little girl and a kitten, well used with background soiling, 43 pages, large clear print, title page shows a photographic illustration of "Posy. " Pages are in a fairly good condition, fully readable but there are some handling marks, with trace of foxing and a little creasing to some corners. Light shelfwear, with occasional pencilling to text; Very Good. Dustwrapper has modest shelfwear, with chips to upper rear hinge and lower spine panel, tiny tears along spine ends and extremities, and faint dampstain to front panel verso; Very Good. The racist children's classic is set in India, and even the earliest versions of the book contained illustrations that clearly drew upon negative colonial stereotypes. Langston Hughes noted that Little Black Sambo was a work of the "pickaninny variety.amusing undoubtedly to the white child, but like an unkind word to one who has known too many hurts to enjoy the additional pain of being laughed at".
