Detailed study of the natural history of the Lothian, Fife and Stirling area of the River Forth, including mammals, birds and habitat. The Vertebrate Fauna of Scotland was begun by J A Harvie-Brown intending to study each river catchment area in the country; some areas were completed by other naturalists as he died before his work was finished, and Rintoul and Baxter were requested to take up the task.

Providing detailed descriptions of different areas from a faunal standpoint and exploring the relationship between the different animals and the landscape. Written by Leonora Jeffrey Rintoul, a Scottish ornithologist and rare female member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and Evelyn Vida Baxter, a Scottish naturalist and ornithologist, and the first woman to receive Union Medal of the British Ornithological Union. The pair are closely associated and considered "constant partners" in their co-authorship of works. They were lifelong friends, and together they studied bird migration for twenty years, which led to several publications, including renowned work The Birds of Scotland in 1953. Baxter and Leonora Jeffrey Rintoul. The two ornithologists often worked together, co- writing other works such as 'Birds of Scotland'. Both women were upstanding ornithologists with Baxter being the first women to receive the 'Union Medal of the British Ornithological Union' and Rintoul being a member of the 'Royal Society of Edinburgh', which was rare for women at the time. This work provides a study of Scottish birds, documenting their status in various locations to determine if the birds were visitors to the area, migrating, breading or natives. In the publisher's original cloth with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally excellent with bumping to the tail of the spine and to the extremities to the boards and slight marks to the rear. Very light scattered spotting to the endpapers. The wrap is very smart with sunning to the spine, handling marks, chipping and the odd small closed tear. Internally firmly bound with generally bright and clean pages with the odd minor spot only.
