Clean and bright with unmarked text and firm binding. Minor gentle signs of handling. Price blacked out on the back. -- "The cultural, aesthetic, philosophical and literary shadow-lines of the present volume move along the traces of European heritage as imprinted in the times of Plato, through the iconography of the Middle Ages up to the present time. The wish of each author is to illustrate the formation of (aesthetic, literary, cultural) European identity in the time they find most inspiring in their intellectual research. From the narratives concerning the education of the future rulers as in Plato's Republic to a contemporary revision of human rights as an expression of the battle against the constraints that restrict freedom of otherness and the ethics of alterity, the route is long and the intellectual inscapes highly stimulating." -- Contents: Introduction; Plato's Republic: The Role of Music, Mathematics and Dialectics in the Education of the Ideal Ruler / Marta Oracz; A Saint Who Never Existed: Extrahistorical Texts About St Wilgefortis / Anna Czarnowus; "A Gardyn Saw I Ful of Blosmy Bowes": The Commanding Love in La Dame à la licorne of the Musée de Cluny / Rafal Boryslawski; Marginal and the Accidental in the Interpretation of the Sacral Space / Jaroslaw Wieczorek; Traces of Otherness: The Mediterranean Culture in Walter Pater and Zbigniew Herbert / Ewa Borkowska; Music, Words, Muses, and the Aesthetics of the Plural / Maciej Nowak; Music for the Vampire: Musical Interpretation of the Myth of the Undead / Katarzyna Ancuta; W.H. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The book At the Threshold of Mystery: Poetic Encounters with Other(ness) addresses the problem of literary dialogue as it appears in the philosophical, poetic and aesthetic discourses in the last two centuries. Central to the dialogue with Other(ness) is a background discussion of the idea of friendship as an encounter with another individual, with another man, with God (or gods) and also with another culture, the issues present in Emmanuel Levinas's ethical philosophy. Merleau-Ponty's concept of intersubjectivity becomes a crucial point in the creative construction of the philosophy of dialogue, whose ideological antecedents date back to the times of Plato. At the border of language, or at the threshold of mystery, there crowds what is metaphysically arcane or immediate, that which signals the other, the out there. The central idea which this book examines is how to reconcile the hermetically sealed historical past with modern times in order to inaugurate the genuine philosophy of dialogue. It is the author's strong belief that by interrupting totality, the poetic work, which often turns into the prophetic signature or voice, the trace of other(ness), seems to give testimony to the primordial experience so essential for the birth of poetry. The poetic examples of the mysterious encounters with Other(ness) are selected, each in its most idiosyncratic way, from Gerard Manley Hopkins, Rainer Maria Rilke, Paul Celan, Seamus Heaney, and two Polish poets, Zbigniew Herbert and Adam Zagajewski (but also from Walter Pater's aesthetic epiphanies).
