He is 'just in the middle of it an…d enjoying it keenly'. The only fault he can find is that he will soon come to the end of it. It deserves great success and he hopes she will 'give us more reminiscences'.

The two leaves of the bifolium on which the letter is written have been separated, and each bears minor evidence of mounting on the blank reverse. He thanks Ashford for allowing him to 'look through your very interesting collection of autographs', which 'does equ…al credit to your energy and to the good nature of mankind in general'. He continues: 'The pages of an autograph book always make me realise that people are not so crabbed and disagreeable to each other as pessimists imagine or profess to believe. Even to a busy man it is no waste of time to give a few seconds in order to gratify or give pleasure to others.'.

Undated, but 4 of the 5 OCLC / Copac holdings estimate 1880 (the 5th dates it 1899). 10pp with numerous in-text illustrations (I am counting 9 including the… title page) + 5 full-page plates including the illustrated Finis. Covers about very good, decoration remaining sharp and bright, though patchily soiled with some scratching to the back. Corners worn with minor loss. Spine cloth crinkled and partially faded. Hinges secure, though the endpapers have been pasted about 1cm at their inner edge so they do not open cleanly. There is a crack at p10, though the binding feels very secure. Interiors very good with some spotting and light creasing. Previous owner's name neatly handwritten to ffep (Lawrence Clark). Before his career as a caricaturist and political cartoonist, Francis Carruthers Gould (1844-1925) worked for a bank, a stockbroker, then the London Stock Exchange, where he would sketch its members and events. This work is inspired by ancient Egyptian and Assyrian art and exploration.
