Francis Kingdon-Ward (1885-1958) was an English botanist, explorer, plant collector and author. In addition to his professional activities as a botanist, in the 1930s Kingdon-Ward also served as a spy for the British India Office. In this book he gives a vivid account of his experiences in the remote and inhospitable fastnesses of the North-East Indian Frontier. It is the story of two expeditions - one to the Burmese Oberland in 1926, and the other, in 1928, to the mountains of Furthest Assam. The main object of these expeditions was the discovery of new species of flowers, shrubs and trees. The book is bound in the original black cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear with light bumping to the spine ends and fading around the top rear spine corner. The contents are tight and clean with foxing to the top and fore edges of the text block and on some pages this has seeped a little way into the fore and/or top edge. There are substantial pencil notes on the rear free endpaper but no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with some soiling with pieces missing from the top rear corner and top corners of the spine. There are a few tears of up to about 1" on the edges and there is scraping with some tearing near the middle of the spine that runs down to about 5" of the spine. This has been repaired on the reverse of the wrapper with tape, as have most of the other tears. The wrapper is in an easily removed clear plastic protective cover.
