Kompetent und anschaulich beschreiben die Autoren die Anfänge des hamburgischen Notariats am Beispiel des Johann Heinrich Hübbe (1771-1847), der die Wandlungen des Notarberufs unter der französischen Herrschaft bis zur anschließenden Neuordnung erlebte und in den folgenden Jahrzehnten das Bild dieses Berufsstandes maßgeblich prägte. Die Abwendung vom rein handwerklichen Aspekt hin zu einer wachsenden Akademisierung des Notariats erzählt der Band am Beispiel Eduard Schramm (1809-1875). Mit Gabriel Riesser (1806-1863) begegnet uns der erste jüdische Notar im vormärzlichen Hamburg, dessen hartnäckig umkämpfte Zulassung sich als Meilenstein seines Erfolges begreifen lässt.
