Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. New York: Ronald L. Smith, 1956. First edition. September, 1956, whole number 50, issue number 16 under the name "Inside and Science Fiction Advertiser" (which is the last name for the famed sci-fi / fantasy fanzine, which was also published under the earlier names "Fantasy Advertiser" and "Science Fiction Advertiser", though the primary focus was always Science Fiction.) Ron Smith became the Editor/Publisher with the November, 1954 issue, which was also the first under this name. Octavo, stapled illustrated wraps, a whopping 72 pp. - thick, for this fanzine. Near Fine. Small chip top right front and another middle left back (see scans), and that's about it. Not much toning to the contents at all; bright, tight and nearly flawless. This September of 1956 issue is certainly one of the best produced in the entire sequence; Ron Smith was really feeling his oats at this time. Featured are "Weird Tales in Retrospect" by August Derleth, and part 3 of Lin Carter's astonishingly intensive research into the of actual books mentioned by H.P. Lovecraft in his stories. Bless him for the energy he spent. A plethora of great illustrations grace this issue, perhaps more than any other issue (of this or any sci-fi genre fanzine of the era, one would guess): H.R. Van Dongen's cover is joined by a bunch of Jack Gaughan illustrations, plus some by each of Dan Adkins, Cindy (Smith), and Marvin Bryer, plus cartoon illustrations by "Miller" and Dave Jenrette - all managed by Art Director Cindy Smith. Other articles include "Randall Garrett's Memo to E.A. Robinson", Larry T. Shaw's "The Baker Murder Case", Lin Carter's poem "The Return of the Fairies", Edmond Hamilton's "Time Traveling in Ohio", a Jonathan Hoag poem reprint, courtesy of George Wetzel, "To the Grand Canyon of the Ohio", William F. Nolan's "Dark Souls in Jeopardy" (a short modernistic three-act play), Garth Bentley's "Complaint of the EM", and illustrated humor by Dave Jenrette, "People to Avoid at a Convention", as a tri-fold foldout. Also, of course, the original meat of the fanzine, the book reviews, here handled mostly by Carter, Robert Silverberg, and Charles Freudenthal. Even some of the seemingly-now-out-of-date book ad from sellers. Pretty much the peak of fanzine-ism. Collector gold, and scarce as hen's teeth. Please review scans. l-pr1. Condizione: Good. Two parts in one volume, folio (333x220 mm). XI, [5], 211, [1 blank], 16 pp. and one engraved folding table. *-**4 A-Cc4 Dd2 A-B4. Title printed in red and black with an engraved illustration. Full-page author's portrait engraved by Paulus Pontius after Gertruda van Veen and overall 103 large engraved illustrations (ca. 180x150 mm, 60 in the first part and 43 in the second) by Pierre Daret after Otto Vaenius in the text. Contemporary mottled calf, spine with six raised band and gilt ornaments and title (joints weak, slightly rubbed and worn, top and bottom of the spine damaged). Some light browning and foxing, outer margin of the portrait and outer and lower margin of the plate slightly trimmed, tear restored to the lower margin of the plate, all in all a good, genuine copy. Lavishly illustrated edition in French, the first printed in Brussels, of Otto Vaenius's Quinti Horatii Flacci Emblemata, one of the most successful emblem books of the 17th century first published Latin and Dutch in Antwerp in 1607, alongside Le Roy Sieur de Gomberville's La doctrine des Moeurs. Gomberville's work was first printed in Paris in 1646 with new illustrations created by the engraver Pierre Daret, who had enlarged and retouched Vaenius's emblems. The Brussels editor Foppens used Daret's plates for his edition, crediting Vaenius as the author while retaining Gomberville's instructive comments. The combination of Vaenius's educational emblems based on Horace's poetry and Gomberville's moral doctrine based on Stoic philosophy, gave new impetus to Vaenius's emblems more than sixty years after their first appearance. Vaenius work was published in more than 25 editions in various languages. It ?is rightly considered a work of primary importance for seventeenth-century Horace reception, and for the development of emblematics: Veen ?translated' the works of the Roman poet into catchy, innovative, and artistically demanding images, engravings of high technical quality, to be used for philosophical and moral meditation. He equipped each engraving with a number of text fragments that he selected from Horace and other ancient, primarily Latin, authors. His work not only opened up new dimensions for the genre of emblematics that arose in the sixteenth century, but also for ethical didactics and for the way illustrated books contributed to the transmission of knowledge. [the work] was extraordinarily successful? (K.A.E. Enenkel, The Invention of the Emblem Book and the Transmission of Knowledge, Leiden, 2018, p. 365).
