The six chapters of the volume deal with the preservation and loss of texts written on metal, linnen, wood, papyrus, parchment scrolls and codices and ancient libraries, with the transmission of texts as manuscripts including the questions of mistakes, forgeries, plagiarism, and text recovery, with the ups and downs of the reception of classical writers from Antiquity to the Middle Ages, with the relationship between classical texts and humanists, with the fate of the classical writers in the age of printed books from the first printed versions to modern editions according to the "Lachmann Method" as well as with classical literature in recent times from the decline of Latin to digital libraries. The books ends with a list of internet ressources, a bibliography, and a register.

Il Cornu copiae di Niccolò Perotti (1430-1480) è stato il primo vocabolario latino dell'età moderna ed anche uno dei primi successi editoriali nella storia della stampa: fra il 1489…e il 1550 ne vennero stampate in tutta Europa decine di edizioni. Dalla biblioteca del Prof. Wolfgang Haase, editore di lunga data dell'ANRW e dell'International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - - Legatura un po' sfregata, nome dell'autore scritto a mano sulla copertina, altrimenti buono e pulito. - Dal testo: Sullintroduzione geo-etnografica…con cui si apre il primo libro dei Gesta Normannorum di Dudone, Lair formulò giudizi piuttosto severi: «rien nest plus confus que sa géographie»; «la question dethnographie nest pas traitée dune façon moins singulière». Non molto diverso fu il giudizio di Prentout, pur nellambito di una valutazione dellopera di Dudone assai diversa da quella di Lair: «une étude tout à fait rapide et superficielle, avec quelques vues justes pourtant sur les causes des invasions des Vikings». Valutazioni di questo tipo sono indubbiamente suggerite da una prima lettura del testo, nel quale colpiscono alcune scelte almeno sorprendenti di Dudone, ed anche qualche palese incongruenza: la collocazione dei Dani (popolo dorigine dei Normanni in Dacia, anziché nella loro sede storica dello Jütland; lulteriore identificazione dei Daci/Dani con i Danai ed insieme lidea che il loro capostipite fosse il Troiano Antenore (e quindi un avversario dei Danai/Greci). Sprache: Italienisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
