First impression of the true first edition. Black and white photograph frontispiece of the author to the fore. Black and white illustrations, mostly to the page margins, by Frank Chesworth, including full-page frontispiece illustration showing a newspaper vendor shadowy sinister-type figure with a news board to the fore, and a grim reaper style end illustration to the rear. ***Very good in moss-green cloth covered boards with gilt titles and decoration to spine and front board. Purple front and rear free endpapers and pastedowns. Fore-edge and bottom edge of text-block untrimmed (rough-cut, as called for). Corners of boards bumped. Edges of boards and head and tail of spine rubbed. Pages clean. Short, old pencil inscription on front endpaper (which can be easily erased). When I beheld him a hundred yards away, shambling up the Liverpool Road, I knew it would come to pass. He was the smallest man in the largest overcoat I ever saw, and every inch a Cockney. And he was splashed up to the equator, for the ways were very miry, and the huge tail flaps of the time-consecrated overcoat (it must have been very ancient when purchased in Petticoat Lane, long years ago) flapped in the breeze as he walked. Well; to say walked is rather a misnomer. He moved, and had the power of volition, but it was clear that (as tramps will tell you) he had no feeling below the knees. He pushed himself along mechanically, and the lower parts of his legs seemed to be dragged after him. ***He was a wiry, wizened, little man of about fifty, evidently inured to Fortune's buffets, and clothed with the indomitable cheerfulness of he Cockney. He sat down on the pedestal, and we smoked and talked matters over. ***He had walked from Dunstable that morning. Was going to Whitechapel, which he had left three years ago. Had tramped from Birmigham---***'Have you any - er - profession! I Inquired. 'Yes, he replied, cheerfully. 'I'm a snob! [cobbler - cockney slang] (Quote from pages 10-11). ***Frank Chesworth was an artist and illustrator (1869-1906). ***First impression of the true first edition in its original green cloth buckram binding. Uncommon. Of interest to collectors of Edward Francis Fay and the illustrations of Frank Chesworth. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
