Zu Beginn des Ersten Weltkriegs wurde Ferenczi als Militärarzt einberufen. Aufgrund seines Alters konnte er jedoch im Land bleiben, musste allerdings seine Budapester Privatpraxis, die er zu diesem Zeitpunkt betrieb, aufgeben. Im Jahr 1918 erhielt Ferenczi den neugeschaffenen Lehrstuhl für Psychoanalyse an der Medizinischen Universität Budapest, der bereits zwei Jahre später von der Regierung Miklós Horthy wieder abgeschafft wurde. Ferenczi entwickelte sich zu einem der produktivsten und kreativsten Psychoanalytiker. Er hat viele Ideen der erst Jahrzehnte später ausgearbeiteten Objektbeziehungstheorie und Psychotraumatologie in seinen Schriften vorweggenommen. Gemeinsam mit Otto Rank propagierte er in der Schrift Entwicklungsziele der Psychoanalyse (1924) eine aktivere Behandlungstechnik mit stärkerem Engagement des Psychoanalytikers (wiki) // . Die geschlechtliche Entwicklung des Einzelwesens gipfelt nach Freuds "Drei Abhandlungen" darin, daß die bis dahin tätigen Autoerotismen (Erregungen der sogenannten erogenen Zonen) und die vorläufigen Organisationen der Sexualität abgelöst werden durch das Primat der Genitalzone, wobei die überwundenen Erotismen und Organisationsstufen in der schließlichen Genitalorganisation als Vorlustmechanismen erhalten bleiben. Hier aber kommt es zur Fragestellung: gibt uns nicht die im Obigen versuchte Zerlegung des Ejakulationsaktes in seine Bestandteile ein Mittel an die Hand, die feineren Vorgänge beim Zustandekommen des Genitalprimats, wenn auch nur teilweise, zu erraten? Was ich nämlich mit einem physiologischen Kunstausdrucke als Koordination urethraler und analer Innervation beschrieb, ließe sich mit dem Wortschatze der Sexualtheorie als Vereinigung analer und urethraler Erotismen zu einem Genitalerotismus darstellen. Es sei mir gestattet, diese neue Auffassung durch eine Namengebung hervorzuheben - nennen wir eine solche Vereinigung zweier oder mehrerer Erotismen zu einer höheren Einheit die Amphimixis der Erotismen oder der Partialtriebe. Doch schon dieser erste Schritt zu einer psychoanalytischen Genitaltheorie stößt auf Schwierigkeiten, die ihre Wahrscheinlichkeit sehr in Frage zu stellen scheinen. Die eine erwächst daraus, daß uns die Physiologie kein Mittel an die Hand gibt, uns die Art, wie eine solche Amphimixis zu Stande kommen könnte, vorzustellen.
