In questa città è morto nel 1957. Discepolo di Adolfo Venturi, del quale fu anche assistente, egli ha soprattutto studiato l'Arte Medievale in Italia e fuori, l'architettura dai bassi tempi al Mille, i mosaici di Ravenna. A questa città si sentiva particolarmente legato per avervi vissuto gli anni dell'adolescenza. Ha svolto una intensa attività di giornalista, prevalentemente come critico d'arte. Ha vissuto il decennio precedente la Seconda Guerra Mondiale in Egitto dove ha diretto un giornale in lingua italiana e l'Istituto Musicale Italiano di Alessandria; si è anche interessato a problemi di storia e di arte egizia, studiando particolarmente l'arte copta e la civiltà prefaraonica. Si è cercato di recuperare tutti i dati disponibili riguardo la vita dei due mosaici esposti presso il Museo di Aquileia al fine di redigerne una "carta di identità" il più attendibile possibile. Viene descritto in dettaglio l'ultimo restauro dell'asaroton, ultimato nel 2005 a Ravenna dalla ditta P.R.P. Il mosaico minuto o micromosaico nacque a Roma nella seconda metà del '700 e il periodo di maggiore produzione di questo tipo di artigianato artistico è quello che va dalla fine di tale secolo a tutto l'800. Nella seconda metà del '500 era partito il grande progetto di decorare a mosaico le volte di San Pietro e di tradurre a mosaico opere pittoriche della stessa basilica, utilizzando materiali vetrosi, detti anche smalti, di vario colore. Questi ultimi erano prodotti a Venezia, ma presto si cominciò a prepararli anche a Roma. In tale contesto, si iniziò a produrre, anche all'interno dello Studio Vaticano del Mosaico, il micromosaico fatto con tessere di piccole dimensioni. Il vetro usato veniva filato in sottili bacchette da cui venivano ricavate le minuscole tessere. Il supporto su cui veniva composto il micromosaico poteva essere di metallo, quale una lamina di rame con bordi rialzati, o una lastrina di pietra con un incavo o di altro tipo, in cui venivano assemblate le piccole tessere fissandole con un opportuno legante. Le stesse opere avevano dimensioni ridotte, eseguite con grande precisione e rifinite con altrettanta cura e potevano essere inserite, ad esempio, su manufatti quali tavolini con piano di marmo, tabacchiere, fermacarte, ecc., o addirittura costituivano spille e gioielli, quando venivano applicati in oreficeria. Dalle origini, circa nell'VIII secolo a.C., e fino all'epoca romana il mosaico era un ornamento pavimentale che imitava dipinti e quindi considerato una tecnica al servizio di un'arte riconosciuta come superiore. Si usavano tessere lapidee o di materiale ceramico e raramente vetrose. L'avvento dei mosaici parietali e l'evoluzione verso un'arte musiva indipendente hanno avuto motiva- zioni sia di ordine estetico-filosofico che funzionale. Questa tecnica era particolarmente efficace per la rappresentazione di immagini sacre e a diffondere anche visivamente il messaggio evangelico e si è affermata in epoca cristiana e soprattutto bizantina; d'altra parte, è stata promossa anche dalla maggiore diponibilità di materiali e in particolare del vetro, prodotto in una varietà illimitata di colori e sfumature. Partendo da cenni sulla produzione generale di vetro dall'Epoca Romana al Medioevo e Rinascimento, viene percorsa l'evoluzione delle tipologie di vetro per mosaico attraverso studi condotti dagli autori di questo testo e di altri studiosi. Fondamentali sono le caratteristiche chimiche di questi materiali per classificarli e cercare di risalire alla loro tecnologia di produzione. I dati chimici raccolti sono stati ottenuti in un ampio periodo di tempo e con varie tecniche analitiche e spesso sono "parziali", riguardando solo costituenti principali ed elementi coloranti e opacizzanti, trascurando elementi minori o in tracce importanti per una completa caratterizzazione delle tessere studiate. Tuttavia, ciò non ha impedito di tracciare una "storia" di questa partico- lare produzione. Riguardo alla elaborazione dei dati chimici per definire tipologie ed effettuare confronti si è ritenuto sufficiente ricorrere a "semplici" diagrammi binari e ternari, data la varietà dei metodi di analisi impiegati e del numero di campioni a volte non adeguato a trattamenti statistici più complessi dei risultati analitici. In 1644 He Took Part In The Campaign Of Repression Of The Revolts In Catalonia Winning In Lerida And Tortosa In 1650 And Therefore Being Named In That Year Viceroy Of Catalonia, And Then Taking Part In The Siege And The Taking Of Barcelona In 1652 . Appointed Viceroy Of Catalonia From 1656 To 1659 , He Defeated The French Army At Camprodón ( 1658 ) And Ter ( 1659 ). At This Point In 1659 He Was Appointed A Member Of The Spanish Council Of State And From 10 September 1668 He Was Appointed Chamber Gentleman Of Philip Iv Of Spain And Governor Of The Duchy Of Milan.
