Dust jacket has some edge soils and small chips around spine ends and corners. Published by Dodd, Mead & Company, this 150-page book documents the humorous, larger-than-life camp yarns of Ed Grant, a semi-famous late 19th and early 20th-century mountain man, hotelier, and fishing guide from the Rangeley Lakes region of Maine. Aggiungi al carrelloAn interesting letter regarding a celebrated Victorian scandal. In 1884 Frederic had come to England with his wife and five children as the London correspondent of the New York TImes. He set up a second household with Kate Lyon, with whom he had a further three children. Lyons was a Christian Scientist, and when Frederic suffered a stroke in 1898, she tried to cure him by faith healing, but he died. At the instigation of Mrs Frederic, Lyon was tried for manslaughter, but was acquitted. 3pp., 12mo. Bifolium with mourning border. In good condition, lightly-aged, with minor traces of two tissue mounts. She begins by stating that his letter has remained unanswered due to '[h]ealth which is not very strong and an unusual pressure of letters'. She is 'somewhat puzzled what to say', but while contributing five guineas, does not wish to be put on the committee of the fund 'for poor Mrs. Frederic & her children'. She concludes: 'I much admired some sides of Mr. Frederic's talent, but circumstances disclosed at the inquest were very painful, and my mind is so far from clear on the whole subject that I should prefer not to be on the Committee'. A postscript regarding the making out of the cheque for five guineas is in another hand. Loosely inserted is a slip of paper with a manuscript note (by Fisher?) regarding the author of the letter. From a batch of papers received by Fisher in connection with the fund.…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. xii, 235, [1] pages. Illustrated endpapers. Illustrations (a few in color). Map. Dornbusch 1348. Format is approximately 8.5 inches by 10.5 inches. This is the third volume of the history of the 2d U.S. Infantry Division in the Korean conflict. It covers the period 1 January 1953--31 December 1953. All efforts were directed to give adequate coverage to all units in the division and to present an accurate and objective account of their activities from the end of T-bone action 24, December 52 to the close of the year 1953. The account of tactical operations for infantry united was carried through until 31 December 1952, when the Division was relieved and moved into reserve. Emphasis was placed upon photographs to record forever this period of the Division's history for the men who lived it. The 2nd Infantry Division ("Indianhead"; "2ID," "2nd ID", or "Second D") is a formation of the United States Army. With the outbreak of hostilities in Korea during the summer of 1950, the 2nd Infantry Division was the first unit to reach Korea directly from the United States. The entire division was committed as a unit on 24 August 1950, relieving the 24th Infantry Division at the Naktong River Line. In the 16-day battle, the division's clerks, bandsmen, technical and supply personnel joined in the fight to defend against the attackers. The Chinese winter offensive was finally blunted by the 2nd Infantry Division on 31 January at Wonju. In February 1951, the division repulsed a powerful Chinese counter-offensive in the epic battles of Chipyong-ni and Wonju. In August 1951, it was on the offensive once again, ordered to attack a series of ridges that had been designated threats to the Eighth Army's line. These actions would devolve into the terrible battles that would become Bloody Ridge and Heartbreak Ridge. Thomas H. John Staff Artist (illustratore).…
