TERRIFIC BOOK, BLACK COVER WITH GOLD ART ON FRONT AND PRINT ON SPINE, PURPLE/ PINK SPINE. DUST COVER VERY GOOD CONDITION. The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám is the title that Edward FitzGerald gave to his translation of a selection of poems, originally written in Persian and of which there are about a thousand, attributed to Omar Khayyám (1048-1131), a Persian poet, mathematician and astronomer. A ruba'i is a two-line stanza with two parts (or hemistichs) per line, hence the word rubáiyát (derived from the Arabic language root for "four"), (18 May 1048 4 December 1131), commonly known as Omar Khayyam (Persian:) was a Persian polymath, mathematician, astronomer, historian, philosopher, and poet. He was born in Nishapur, the initial capital of the Seljuk Empire. As a scholar, he was contemporary with the rule of the Seljuk dynasty around the time of the First Crusade. Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Fine-press small-format edition of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, translated by Edward Fitzgerald and illustrated by Paul McPharlin. Published by Peter Pauper Press, Mount Vernon, NY (rather than White Plains or New Rochelle) and the line "set by hand in Deberny typefaces," date this copy to roughly 1947-1952, yet illustrator Paul McPharlin died in 1948. The Deberny typefaces were imported from the Deberny & Peignot foundry in Paris, used by Peter Pauper for a short window before they shifted to machine composition in the mid-1950s. That detail narrows this copy's production to roughly 1949 ± 1 year . Decorative cream boards patterned with gold stars and swirls, housed in a red slipcase. Interior features gilt-bordered pages, red frontispiece illustration, and elegant typography typical of Peter Pauper's mid-century gift editions. A compact, artful presentation of Fitzgerald's classic translation, emphasizing design and craftsmanship over scholarly apparatus. Some minor staining on cover, damage to the slipcase, and the previous owner's signature "Evelyn M. Murphy" on the coverpage. Text appears to be unmarked. Hard cover edition. Dimensions: 5" by 7.5". Color illustrations. 1.5 Pound Media Shipping Rate. Combine items and SAVE! Genre(s): World Literature / Philosophy / Poetry / English. (B110). Paul, McPharlin (illustratore).…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near fine. First thus. First edition/Fifth printing; Fine/Near fine This slim exquisite volume demonstrates what The Folio Society is all about: reprinting classic literature in beautiful, fine editions contained in slipcovers worthy of the volumes they protect. In this case, the work in question is "The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam," utilizing the first translation from the Persian performed by Robert Fitzgerald in 1859 and first widely published in 1861. This translation has 75 quatrains. Fitzgerald admitted from the beginning that his approach was quite free and his translation was never literal. His approach has been criticized almost from the beginning and even his source material has come under suspicion - but still, this is the text that made "The Rubaiyat" so popular. Within twenty years of publication there were "Omar Khayyam clubs" wherever English was spoken. But you can read all about the publication history within this copy itself in an introduction that even suggests alternative, more literal translations. (It is enigmatically signed by one "T.W."-"enigmatically" because no one with those initials is mentioned on the title or copyright pages.) The name of illustrator Virgil Burnett DOES appear prominently on the title page, for good reason. He supplied five sumptuous full-page illustrations similar to woodcuts in appearance, but with red highlights and frames instead of simple black ink. He also illustrated the front and back end papers. The work is bound in a reddish-brown cloth covered in interlocking patterns stamped in gold and silver foil, much like the colored tiles often found in Turkey and Iran for centuries. It is all contained in a solid slipcase covered in gold paper. Altogether.sumptuous. The russet-colored bookcloth binding is covered, back and front, with an intricate Islamic geometric pattern stamped in silver and gold foil. The binding is tight and square with no signs of wear or damage. The book was published without a dust jacket but with a sturdy slipcase covered with gold paper. The slipcase is classified in as "near fine" condition because of rubbing and other light shelf wear, but it is perfectly intact. The text block shows no soiling, tears, creases or marks. It contains five full-page illustrations as well as pictorial end papers, both front and back, that spread over both the inside cover and the first free end paper and differ from each other. The text is set in Poliphilus and Blado types, in black italics for the text of the quatrains but red for the numbers heading each quatrain. This is the fifth printing of the 1970 edition, issued in 1978. Burnett, Virgil (illustratore).…

All other pages are in very fine unmarked condition and the spine is exceedingly tight and square (see photographs) " 'The moving finger writes, and having writ, moves on.Here with a Loaf of Bread beneath the Bough." The quatrains of Omar the tent-maker have more admirers today than ever before. Lines from the Rubaiyat, such as those above, are immortal. But behind the mere beauty of Omar's quatrains lie a wisdom, a philosophy of life and a controversial but intriguing code of ethics that have contributed at least equally to the enduring quality of these masterpieces. Omar, known to us as a poet, was also a scientist and a learned man. In his own times and country his bold and unconventional views were often frowned upon. Having failed to find any providence but destiny and not believing in the next world, he turned to making the most of this life. Consequently his verse is filled with a live-for-today philosophy, a preference for sensual pleasures and a glorification of love that have made the Rubaiyat delightful reading for many generations of admirers. To Edward Fitzgerald the world owes the Rubaiyat, for it had previously been buried in obscurity. Fitzgerald's rendition of the beautiful lines of Omar into English verse has stood for many years as a monument to the translator's artistry. This volume contains the first English edition, the second, and the fifth. All have their stanch defenders. The magnificent illustrations by Edmund Dulac contribute no little to making this book THE edition of the Rubaiyat to read and own." - from the inner front jacket flap. Dulac, Edmund (illustratore).…
