There is a total of 25 countries covered, with thorough in-depth overviews of their hunting areas, background information, and best times to hunt. All the game animals are covered including the Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino, and elephant); the nine spiral-horn antelope; game indigenous to only one region; game indigenous to most regions; the rarities; the plains game, etc. Great stories by people who have hunted and lived in the areas. There are chapters on medical preparation, booking a safari, trophy care, the rules, and the rifles. There is also a detailed checklist of game animals by country, and detailed maps. There were more than two dozen contributors. There are hundreds of color photgraphs, and updated tables on animals and where they are available. No doubt, this is the ultimate safari guide. Colour photographs throughout, maps, bibliography. Dark green cloth, spine titled in gilt. Very good copy in slightly used dust-wrapper. The prototype of this book, Jay Mellon's African Hunter, was published in 1975. This was drawn from numerous contributors, based on experience gathered in the 1960s and '70s. "Jay Mellon wrote about the Africa of a different era. .in which elephants with tusks over a hundred pounds a side were not unusual and when there was little or no pressure from expanding human populations on the game fields." The period of decolonisation from the 1960's onwards saw the spread of civil wars, chaos and economic crises, a spin-off of which was the disappearance of much large, edible fauna in an African countryside awash with military rifles and empty of effective law-enforcement. This book is based on Mellon's old book but addresses the new situation, where many governments have taken control of their own countryside once more, and see game management and regulated hunting as one means of repairing the damage of the last few decades. Detailed information on present day safari hunting in Africa, country by country. Local experts contribute information and advice, as well as numerous anecdotes of their own experiences in the field. Three or four chapters each on: South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia, Mozambique, Namibia, Angola, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, the Congo, Central African Republic, Egypt. Contributors include: Craig Boddington, Charles Leonard Black, A. Nonymous, Peter Flack, Henry van den Broecke, Gregor Woods, Tony Tomkinson, Lou Hallamore, Graham Hingeston, Jan Oosthuizen, Joe Coogan, Bob Peterson, Elias Phiri, Rolf Rohwer, Joof Lamprecht, Hugo Seia, Steven Christenson, Walt Prothero and many more. .
