Carmen William "Curley" Fletcher (1892?1954), also known as Curley W. Fletcher and Curley Fletcher, was an American composer of cowboy songs and cowboy poetry. A prolific creator of this material, he is best remembered for the classic cowboy song "The Strawberry Roan", written in 1915, and for this 1931 book Songs of the Sage. Like many similar artists, Fletcher had numerous occupations, including cowboy/cowhand, mineral prospector, poet, champion rodeo rider as well as promoter, musician, publisher, movie actor, and advisor for Hollywood films. His songs and poems are regarded as strong material that comes across beautifully with or without music. They have been recorded by many musicians, particularly Marty Robbins and Michael Martin Murphey. He appeared as a rancher in the 1947 movie Gunsmoke. Ref YY 7.

First edition of this anthology by the California cowpuncher born in San Francisco, reared in the Owens Valley, and known for his Western Ballad "The Strawberry Roan" which opens this anthology of verse and songs. Fletcher (1892-1954) was also known for penning "he died with his boots on" in Yavapai Pete, the second in this anthology, and also appeared in the 1947 film, Gunsmoke. Welch (1886-1958) was a noted Western artist, muralist, and Fletcher's father-in-law for a spell.

Bifolium separated along the fold but both leaves are present, a large dampstain along the bottom left corner of the front cover affecting throughout, the number 10 written in ink at the top of the front cover, and edgewear, a complete but good only copy. For voice and piano, with chord diagrams for ukulele. The back cover features a short sample of "The Frontiers Of Freedom" also by Curley Fletcher. The front cover features a small monochrome portrait of Curley Fletcher. Curley Fletcher is probably best remembered for his song, "The Strawberry Roan," which is referred to here on the cover. Unrecorded by *OCLC* and appears to be equally uncommon in the trade.

Welch. Curley Fletcher was a champion rodeo rider and prolific songwriter, now best remembered for "Strawberry Roan," (the first poem in 'Songs of the Sage') chosen by members of the Western Writers of America as one of the Top 100 Western songs of all time. Tex Ritter was a pioneer of American country music and a long-time cowboy actor; he is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame. In addition to Ritter, Fletcher's songs have been recorded by a broad range of iconic singers - from Roy Rogers, Gene Autrey and Marty Robbins to Lacy J. Dalton and Michael Martin Murphey. Fletcher and Ritter were longtime friends and were even business partners in accumulating old mining claims.
