[1]. 11" x 7.5" LIKE PRINTING IN A PREVIOUS AGE During his final year as the president of Britain's Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours, William Russell Flint contacted president of The Golden Cockerel Press, Christopher Sandford, to produce his illustrated edition of Robert Herrick's poems. Full of l…ush, sensual crayon drawings to match Herrick's risqué poems, printing Flint's project returned Sandford to the "nostalgic thrill of printing, as it were, in a previous age!" This collection features Herrick's most beloved poems, including "To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time." This edition is limited to 550 numbered copies, of which numbers 1-105 are bound in sheepskin and accompanied by eight extra loose prints, of which this is 47. This copy is signed by the Flint on the limitation page. [Cock-a-Hoop 199]. Moderate toning to spine and extremities with spots of rubbing, light soiling to boards, still very good, in very good slipcase with moderate wear to extremities. Overall tight and internally clean copy. Issued in Sangorski & Sutcliffe full cream sheepskin, pictorially stamped in gilt, teg, turn-ins ruled in gilt, in publisher's marbled slipcase. Forty-two, two-tone collotype reproductions with eight individual prints loose laid in wrap-around band by William Russell Flint. (illustratore). Signed.

William Russell Flint contributed to a number of early 20th-century edi…tions of the Apocrypha. He was described by Charles Wheeler, the president of the Royal Academy, as an artist of "a steady hand, keen eye, and gay spirit in a shaky world" (ODNB). The introduction to this edition was provided by M. R. James. Although best-known now for his ghost stories, James had an extensive and eminent career as a biblical scholar, with a particular specialism in the apocryphal tales. His The Apocryphal New Testament (1924), a scholarly collection of all the known "apocryphal gospels, acts, epistles, and apocalypses was standard until J. K. Elliott's collection of the same name appeared in 1993" (ODNB). Ransom, p. 314. Quarto. Colour frontispiece and 3 mounted colour plates, text printed within green frames. William Russell Flint's vivid style is particularly suited to evoking the worlds of Ancient Greek idyllic and pastoral poetry. This edition was translated by Andrew Lang (1844-1912), a classicist an…d anthropologist best known for his writings on folklore and mythology. In his translations, "his virtuosity clamoured for expression, and works of apparently effortless expertise flowed from his pen" (ODNB). As noted by Gardner, "The Greek world of poetic escapism was typified by the idyllic scenes of nymphs and shepherds romping in summer fields to the sound of pan-pipes. The great exponent of this type of poetry was Theocritus whose traditions were carried on by Bion and Moschus. The work for [Philip] Lee Warner's book was completed in 1913 but it was not to be until 1922 that the two-volume work was to appear under the Medici Banner". Keith S.
