Mozart in Anglophone Cultures brings together papers given at the 15th Salzburg Annual Conference on English Literature and Culture held in 2006 to commemorate Mozart's 250th birthday. The volume concentrates in particular on the reception of Mozart and his work in English literature and film, on English translations and adaptations of Mozart's operas and songs, on the performance history of Mozart's operas on stages in the English-speaking world, and on relationships and influences between Mozart and English composers. Aspects covered in the volume include: Peter Shaffer's Amadeus as historiographic metafiction, the reception of Mozart in Australia, Mozart's works as intertext in James Joyce's Ulysses and Barbara Trapido's Temples of Delight, Mozart's influence on American ballet and W. H. Auden's re-writing of The Magic Flute. In its focus on the creative reception of Mozart rather than on Mozart's oeuvre, this book hopes to show the importance of a living myth in various cultural traditions (Victorian, Modernist and Postmodernist) - and, conversely, to reveal Mozart and his own age's mode of listening as being equally embedded in cultural traditions.

Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. The essay has constituted an important prose form since the sixteenth century and opens up an intriguing field for interdisciplinary study. Applied to such heterogeneous writings as maxims, aphorisms, proverbs, letters, and treatises, it has always eluded a clear definition. Not surprisingly, literary and cultural studies have been reluctant to tackle what appears to be a random array of prose texts straddling the boundaries between literature, philosophy and scientific writing, criticism and journalism. This volume explores the shifts and transformations of this rich genre, re-interpreting classic texts as well as drawing attention to previously neglected examples from a variety of cultural fields. A particular focus lies on the political and transformative potential of the essay, which has been embraced by women writers, activists, revolutionary thinkers or marginalized groups to give voice to their ideas and concerns. Thus, the essay has often been central in bringing to the fore new structures of feeling and emerging intellectual trends, conjoining literary and epistemic properties. Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. The popular re-imaginings of past historical periods - in particular of 'successful' periods like the Victorian or the Tudor Ages - in modern media are currently a flourishing field of study. By comparison, the Restoration period (1660-1688/9) is under-researched in studies of popular historiography. This era has a dubious reputation characterized by uninhibited libertines, the twin catastrophes fire and plague, and a growing absolutism overcome in the 'Glorious Revolution'. Yet in the last three centuries, the Restoration period has featured in numerous historical novels, historical romances, in history plays and historical comedies. The present study examines changing images of this period in popular historiographical genres since the early eighteenth century and analyses them in the context of the political, cultural, and historiographical discourses of their time. Additionally, it traces the historiographical changes in these genres, offering insights into their developments and functions in the field of historiography.
