Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. Foes to Folly follows the misadventures of Amaziah Badger, a man swept into the whirlwind of a spiritualist movement that will redefine society and change the course of his life. This book prophesizes the downfall of men and the rise of women, all under the sway of an unseen spiritual force that drives events in unexpected directions. Expect satire, skepticism, and humor woven together to challenge the very fabrics of 19th-century American life and to question the absurdity that often accompanied the rise of spiritualism and the women's suffrage movements. This book will delight and horrify readers, compelling them to ponder the nature of humanity, the fight for equality, and the foibles we all must face. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Coffin engraved on wood by Edward Bookhout, original decorated gray cloth, front and rear panels stamped in blind, spine panel stamped in gold, pale yellow endpapers. First edition. "Satire on feminism and Spiritualism, involving futurity and an ideal society based on women's agitation . In approach imitative of early Dickens or Theodore Hook, but with no great literary merit. Somewhat clumsy as satire, for the various levels of reality are not well integrated. Nevertheless, important for its use of contemporary folkways." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 799. The book's spine title is "Lucy Boston." The story ends with the "laconic" epitaph: "SPIRITUALISM / AND / WOMAN'S RIGHTS! / Twins in their birth and ill begot; / Twins in their grave -- there let 'em rot." Wright (II) 926. Hamilton 508 (citing the Alden and Beardsley 1855 imprint). Early owner's penciled signatures on the front free endpaper. Cloth worn at spine ends and corners, scattered foxing and soiling in the text, one plate partially loose and a bit proud, a good copy. A better than average copy. (#157183).…

Cloth. Condizione: Good. First edition. The scarce first edition of this fascinating interdisciplinary satire, relating to feminism and spiritualism. The first edition of the work. Very scarce, particularly the Alden and Beardsley imprint. Hamilton 508. Illustrated with frontispiece, vignette, and eight plates. Collated complete. Written by Fred Folio, believed to be a pseudonym, little is known of the author. With a dedication to one 'T. P. Munrab', an anagram of P. T. Barnum. Folio dedicated the work to Barnum following his notable 'Fiji Mermaid hoax', considering Barnum a master fraudster and paving the way for many spiritualists to come. The work satirises both spiritualism and the women's rights movements, and although was met with criticism for the somewhat clumsy handling of the issues, is nonetheless an important contemporary work on the topics, ending with the epitaph "Spiritualism and Women's Rights! Twins in their birth and ill begot; Twins in their grave -- there let 'em rot." In the original black cloth binding. Externally, smart with rubbing and light bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine and marks to the board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd spot and light tide marks to pages one to forty. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Good. None (illustratore). book.…
