Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. Jacket by Geoff Hunt (illustratore). 1st Edition. First edition, first impression with full number line. Ex library with usual stamps and defects. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners slightly bruised, not price clipped (£18.99), no personal inscriptions, internally cleanish tight and square, overall a reasonable copy for ex library. 136pp, illustrated endpapers. At the time of his death, Patrick O'Brian (1914-2000), had begun to write a novel to follow on from 'Blue at the Mizzen'. These are the chapters he had completed of the final voyage of Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin, the greatest friendship of modern literature. The story picks up from the end of 'Blue at the Mizzen' when Jack Aubrey receives the news in Chile, of his elevation to flag rank, Rear Admiral of the Blue Squadron, with orders to sail to the South Africa station. This new novel, unfinished and untitled at the time of O'Brian's death, would have been a chronicle of that mission, and much else besides. As the novel opens, we are able to visit these friends we have followed so very far in a rare state of almost perfect felicity. Jack has seen his illegitimate son ably discharging important duties. Sophie and his daughters are with him, Brigid is with her father, she's thriving, and Stephen is with a woman who is very dear to him. Jack at last, is flying a rear admiral's flag aboard a ship of the line. The chapters left on O'Brian's death are presented here both in printed version including his corrections to the typescript, and a facsimile of his manuscript, which goes several pages beyond the end of the typescript and includes marginal notes by O'Brian. And so this great 'roman fleuve' comes to an end with Jack, with his 'sacred blue flag', sailing through fair sweet days, Stephen with his dissections and new love, Killick muttering darkly over the toasted cheese. Of course, we would rather have had the whole story, instead we have this proof that O'Brian's powers of observation, his humour and his understanding of his characters were undiminished to the end.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. First Edition. The Shinboners: The Complete History of the North Melbourne Football Club - Since 1869. Written by Nick Bowan, Dan Eddy, & Andrew Gigacz. Edited by Geoff Slattery. Foreword by Glenn Archer. Numerous colour and b&w photographs throughout, including many fascinating vintage shots. Includes a list of every player since 1925, club records, team of the century, honour roll, plus bibliography. With club theme song printed to inner front flap of dustjacket. From rear cover (in full): "'North Melbourne's history has been a mix of great struggle, great honour, and, since the 1970s, more than a fair share of glory.' So wrote Nick Bowen in his introduction to The Shinboners. After years of battling bureaucracy, North Melbourne, which had dominated the VFA through the early part of the 20th century, was finally admitted to the Victorian Football League in 1925, along with Footscray and Hawthorn. Those early years in the Big League were tough, and it was not until 1945 that North played its first final, and 1950, its first Grand Final. In 1975 came the first Premiership. Along the club's long history, there have been legends and heroes, on and off the field, as the club fought many down times, and more than occasional threats to merge or to be relocated. This proud and diverse history is wonderfully represented in The Shinboners, a book that blends great stories, great moments and great individuals with wonderful archival photos". Large format volume. Printed in China. Bound in original black boards with bright silver lettering to front board & spine, pictorial endpapers (an illustration titled "North Story" by Jamie Cooper), in publisher's unclipped pictorial dustjacket. A very nice clean tight solid hardcover copy. The dustjacket is now protected in a removable clear mylar cover. 288pp. Large heavy book, extra shipping may be required. Scarce title. RARE.
