Il rédige avec Henri Mendras un ouvrage de synthèse sur les tendances et paradigmes du changement social et il commence à développer un modèle d analyse des relations entre tendances du changement. Ce modèle sera progressivement mis au point par un groupe de sociologues qui se réunit, durant les années 1980 et 1990, les lundis soirs à l OFCE et qui prend le nom de Louis Dirn (anagramme de lundi soir).
