The Hogarth Press was founded as an independent company in 1917 by authors Leonard and Virginia Woolf. It was named after their house in west London, in which they began hand printing books as a hobby during the inter war period. In 1938 Virginia Woolf relinquished her interest in the business and it was then run as a partnership by Leonard Woolf and John Lehmann until 1946, when it became an associate company of Chatto & Windus. Quite a scarce book. Jacket by J. B. (possibly Julian Bell, son of Clive Bell) (illustratore).

Forster, Stephen Spender, et al. This was the Review Copy of Biographer and Critic Malcolm Elwin (1903-1973). Loosely inserted is a typed carbon copy of Malcolm Elwin's Review of the book, 7 pages. Tipped onto the front end-paper is the original compliments slip from Angela Pain of Hansom Books Ltd on which she has asked Malcolm to produce a review of around 1200 words by April 8th, and also the compliments slip from Messrs. Hutchinson and Co Publisher's Ltd enclosing the book and asking Malcolm Elwin for a review of the book and requesting that no notice of the review should appear prior to the publication date of 25 Mar 1957.

Printed on mould-made paper in a limited numbered edition of 1300 tall copies by the Stellar Press for distribution in the UK by the Nonesuch Press. This is copy #53. Gift inscription on ffep handwritten and SIGNED by the Editor, John Morris and is dated19 September 1956. Morris writes the Introduction. Also numbered and signed by the US/Canada publisher, Max Reinhardt on the limitation page at end of the book. Unlike the standard edition this volume contains illustrations by B.S. Biro. Grey cloth covered beveled edged boards with bright gilt lettering and bands on spine. Faded gilt top page edges. Untrimmed fore edge and lower page edges. Few uncut (and partially cut) pages, such as pp95/98, p271, p307. Small vertical brown mark (heat/burn?) to top edge of front cover. Otherwise in fine condition. Clean inside pages. Some offsetting and spotting to the blank end-papers. Free from inscriptions and erasures. Very small 'Times Book Club ' stickers to the lower rear pastedowns.The WRAPPERS are complete and are in Very Good++ or better condition with just a little loss and rubbing at the spine tips. Some toning to the spine and the edges of the covers and flap folds. The cover artwork by Maxwell Armfield looks very striking in the removable brodart archival covers. Each volume contains six issues of the periodical. There were only twelve issues of this periodical in total. Literary contributors include: Edward Thomas, Stephen Reynolds, Robin Flower, Hugh de Selincourt, James Stephens, F. Tennyson Jesse, Gilbert Cannan, Frank Swinnerton, E.M. Forster, George Bourne, Katherine Mansfield, Herbert Trench, Keith Henderson, Beryl de Zoete, Maxwell Armfield, Douglas Goldring, W.H. Davies, Geoffrey Whitworth, Lord Dunsany, John Drinkwater, Walter de la Mare and Vivian Locke Ellis (who presumably was the editor and publisher). Artwork by: Keith Henderson, C.J. Holmes, Maxwell Armfield, C.M. Gere, Jack B. Yeats, Claude Shepperson, Norman Wilkinson, Auguste Rodin, Muirhead Bone, John Sloane, Gwen Raverat (under the name of Gwendolen Darwin) etc. Volume one includes Katherine Mansfield's 'A Fairy Story' (December 1910, printed when she was 22) - thus antedating by six months her first formal appearance in book form,''In a German Pension'.). The story is attributed to 'Katherina Mansfield' in the periodical. A scarce set on their own right but more-so with their wrappers in such collectible condition. More images available on request. Some dustwrappers faded. Despite the flaws, this is an important and desirable set.
