Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: new. Fortescue, Mia (illustratore). Paperback. The Flubb is a strange being who's driven by a restless wanderlust and a ceaseless hunger for storing words in his ample belly. Evolving from a transparent figure that materializes from nothingness, the Flubb somehow manages to rise to the dizzying heights of assistant lexicographer, his naive good nature carrying him through as he learns the wicked ways of the world. Along the way, he passes through a ridiculous variety of jobs-including porridge chef, zookeeper, and a brief stint as the archbishop of Canterbury-for many of which he is particularly unsuited. He embarks on a worldwide cruise, and an infatuation with the woman whose face appears on the ten-pence coin leads to hilarity at Buckingham Palace. These experiences, along with his introduction to the ways in which correct diction can make all the difference, make for an unforgettable novel that will leave readers giggling long after the last page. The first book in the Adventures of the Flubb trilogy, The Evolution of the Flubb is a rollicking journey full of adventure, fun, and delightfully wonderful wordplay. This item is printed on demand. Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. This volume is the first comprehensive comparative dictionary to cover the whole of the Chukotko-Kamchatkan ('Paleosiberian') family. Reconstructions for both the proto-Chukotian and Proto-Chukokto-Kamchatkan levels are set up. Separate sections on inflections and derivational affixes and an outline of what is known of the (pre-)historical background are included. The genealogical status of this family has long been controversial, but its coherence as a family can now be considered as proven. Its geographical position between Siberia and northernmost America provides it with particular importance as regards attempts to relate the languages and peoples of the Old World with those of the New. This dictionary is aimed at scholars andstudents of linguistic typology and historical linguistics in general as well as to a smaller audience of specialists in the field of Paleosiberian language studies. The dictionary makes the typologically interesting Paleosiberian language groups more accessible to linguistic researchers who do not read Russian. Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - In building up a scenario for the arrival on the shores of Alaska of speakers of languages related to Eskimo-Aleut with genetic roots deep within Sineria, this book touches upon a number of issues in contemporary historical linguistics and archaeology. The Arctic 'gateway' to the New World, by acting as a bottleneck, has allowed only small groups of mobile hunter-gatherers through during specific propitious periods, and thus provides a unique testing ground for theories about population and language movements in pre-agricultural times. Owing to the historically attested prevalence of language shifts and other contact phenomena in the region, it is arguable that the spread of genes and the spread of language have been out of step since the earliest reconstructable times, contrary to certain views of their linkage. Proposals that have been put forward in the past concerning the affiliations of Eskimo-Aleut languages are followed up in the light of recent progress in reconstructing the proto-languages concerned. Those linking Eskimo-Aleut with the Uralic languages and Yukagir are particularly promising, and reconstructions for many common elements are presented. The entire region 'Great Beringia' is scoured for typological evidence in the form of anomalies and constellations of uncommon traits diagnostic of affiliation or contact. The various threads lead back to mesolithic times in south central Siberia, when speakers of a 'Uralo-Siberian' mesh of related languages appears to have moved along the major waterways of Siberia. Such a scenario would acount for the present distribution of these languages and the results of their meeting with remnants of earlier linguistic waves from the Old World to the New.
