Through the experiences of individual characters, the author explores the diverse perspectives and motivations of those who fought in the war. This microcosm of French society is filled with characters from all walks of life, each with their own unique story to tell. Gaspard, a Parisian journalist and the life of the regiment, is one of the main characters. Despite the horrors of war, Gaspard and his comrades find moments of joy and laughter, sharing stories, singing songs, and trying to make the best of their situation. The author does not shy away from the realities of war. The men face hunger, exhaustion, and the constant threat of death. They witness the horrors of battle and the suffering of the wounded. But even in the face of such adversity, they maintain their humanity and compassion. This book is a powerful and moving account of the human experience in war. It is a story of courage, resilience, and the indomitable spirit of those who fought in the Great War. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition in book form, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the title page, "To Ben Towsley, a friend of many years standing, G. Selmer Fougner". This was among the first significant post-Prohibition American guides to wines and spirits. Fougner began writing Along the Wine Trail as a daily column for the New York Sun immediately following the repeal of Prohibition in 1933. The author felt "that the new generation was entirely unfamiliar with the general subject of wines and spirits was obvious despite the hard lessons of prohibition days. The older generation, on the other hand, had apparently forgotten much of what it had learned in the pre-war era" (preface). His column was issued as in three pamphlets the following year, and published in book form here. It tells "the story of the world's most famous wines, a history of distillation, and a description of all spirituous liquors, where they come from and how they are made; together with four hundred specially tested recipes for cocktails, hot and cold punches and all other types of drinks; also simple rules for amateur wine making and notes on how to install and care for a wine cellar" (introduction). Octavo. Original red cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt. Menu from a dinner served at the historic Williamsburg Inn, 17 February 1937, loosely inserted. A little rubbed, front hinge split after endpapers, slight soiling to edges. A good copy.
