Four folio sheets in colors, illustrating the title poem, plainly removed from (per a modern handwritten note, on a post-it) the Christmas number of The Graphic for 1886. 16 x 11 inches, with an average eight vignette images per page; color process is unfamiliar to this cataloguer --not lithographed, yet layered. Paperstock a little browned, leaves quite edgeworn with 3/4 inch tears and a shallow crease, none affecting images, no fold-lines old or new, item to be mailed safely rolled. A chubby old gent puts on his pinks and joins a society ride. Not so much about the fox as about human matrimony (last image takes place at the altar).

In the original dustwrapper, unclipped (priced 10s. 6d. net on front flap), complete but toned on spine panel with general overall rubbing and soil, just VG. An attempt to solve the "age-old problem of scent" among foxhunters (this cataloguer, for one, can smell them a mile away) and to "work out a perfectly simple instrument which will tell the hunting man exactly the percentage of chances of scent on any day at any time." Pollard, in addition to being an avid huntsman, was a British Special Operations officer, an early member of MI6, and the author of numerous works on small arms, a subject in which he was a recognized expert. In reviewing Pollard's colorful if rather dubious career, it occurs to us that being smelt ought to have been fairly low on his list of worries: during the Irish War he conducted two legendarily byzantine and ultimately bungled false flag campaigns against the Nationalists; some years afterwards, in the Spanish Civil War, taking the side of the Fascists, he served as Franco's personal courier and later defended the bombing of Guernica as "a perfectly legitimate target." Stench enough there to put an entire county's worth of vulpine citizens on high alert.

A lithographed map (approximately 400 × 340 mm), extensively hand-coloured in outline, dissected into 15 panels and mounted on linen (as issued), folded and mounted on the inside rear surface of cloth boards (external dimensions 123 × 100 mm). Red pebble-grain cloth stamped in blind and lettered in gilt; marbled paper on the exposed pastedown and cloth panel of the folded map; ownership stamp on the pastedown and one cloth panel; in excellent condition. The first issue of this map appeared in 'Hobson's Fox-Hunting Atlas', which comprised county maps from the 'British Atlas' of J. & C. Walker (first published in 1837). This version is a lithographic transfer, taken from the original steel plate engraved by J. & C. Walker, overprinted with 'Places of the meeting of foxhounds' and boundaries of the various hunts. These include the Vale of White Horse, the Craven, the Tiedworth, and the Duke of Beaufort. 'J. & C. Walker' appears under the title, and 'No. 38' is printed in two margins.

The Staff College Drag Hunt at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, was established in 1869 as a private pack which drag-hunted twice a week in the area surrounding Camberley, and after more than a hundred and fifty years, the hunt still rides. 1p, 12mo. Text enclosed in rules with decorative corners. In fair condition, lightly worn and spotted, with traces of stub and mounting on blank reverse. Titled: 'The Staff College Drag Hunt Song. / By Major M. Churchill, 2/Northampton Regiment, / Master, S.C.D.H., 1885-86, / Music from Mr. F. Cotton's "Forty Minutes." ' Seven numbered four-line stanzas and the following chorus: 'Then let us drink drag-hunting boys, and pass the bottle round, / Drink to the horse, the fox of course, a bumper to the hound; / And let us toast our farmers as a right good jolly sort, / When you haven't time for hunting then, the Drag is rattling sport.' First stanza: 'The gallant steed by nature made companion for the hound, / Will give us great enjoyment as o'er the fields we bound; / There's nothing like fox-hunting, and some might say the stag, / But when you can't get either, then there's nothing like the Drag.' The fourth stanza notes that 'many a Staff aspirant has saluted mother earth'. There are also references to the Staff College, Tangley Park and Easthampstead Park. The final stanza gives a toast to 'our Secretary's health', as 'He's the proper sort of fellow to instruct the R. M. C.' See image.

Aggiungi al carrelloOriginal hand-coloured engraving. Plate Size: 61 cm x 46.5 cm. Frame Size: 77 cm x 63 cm. In very good- condition. Minor abrasion with slight tear to upper part of engraving. A wonderful scene by John Nost Sartorius illustrating a late 18th century British fox hunt, in rich, clear engravings by J. Neagle and J. Peltro. Plate IV shows the bad/good culmination of the hunt (one's opinion depending on whose side one takes - the hunters or the hunted) as the team of riders and excited hounds have captured the fox. The differing expressions on the riders' faces are fascinating. The accompanying lines of verse from William Somerville's 'The Chase' (1735) read as follows: "A chosen few / Alone the sport enjoy, nor droop beneath / Their pleasing toils. The unerring hounds / With peals of echoing vengeance close pursue. / Listen! now they are at him again. Now Reynard / Look to yourself. It is just up with him. / What a crash they make; the whole wood resounds. / That turn was very short. There now; / Aye; now they have him. Who-hoop. Further inscription reads: 'To Charles Boldero, Esqr, of Aspeden Hall Herts. This Print is dedicated by his much obliged and obedient Servant John Harris.' John Nost Sartorius (17551828),] was an English painter of horses, horse-racing and hunting scenes. He is considered the best-known and prolific of the Sartorius family of artists. (Wikipedia).
