One black-and-white frontispiece portrait of Margaretta Fox and at least one facsimile reprint of a letter by Elisha K. Kane (tipped in after Page x), comp…lete. Covers are clean and intact overall except for slight discoloration, a faint water ring on front cover, and chipping at corners and head and tail of spine. A Very Good copy. An account about the secret marriage between Elisha K. Kane (1820-1857), a United States Navy medical officer and Arctic explorer, and Margaretta (also, Margaret or Maggie) Fox (1833-1893), an American Spiritualist medium. This book contains many reprinted extracts of Elisha's and Margaretta's love letters. Elisha took part in the two Grinnell expeditions to the Arctic in which he and his team were tasked with discovering the fate of the lost explorer, John Frankiln. In 1852, Elisha met the Fox sisters, Leah, Margaretta, and Catherine Fox, then at the height of their careers as Spiritualist mediums, and fell in love with Margaretta. Elisha was convinced that the sisters were frauds but hoped to reform Margaretta. Elisha and Margaretta married in 1852. Margaretta converted to Roman Catholicism, but after Elisha passed away in 1857, she returned to giving Spiritualist performances. In 1888, Margaretta and Kate made a public confession that their Spiritualist "rappings" were a hoax. This book was published anonymously by Margaretta following a dispute between her and Elisha's family after Elisha had passed away. Margaretta had tried to get a widow's annuity, but the Kane family refused to grant it to her. Five years later, Margaretta filed a lawsuit against the Kanes. They eventually reached an agreement in which Margaretta would get the annuity in exchange for Elisha's love letters. However, Margaretta charged that the Kanes had not followed through and published this book in response.
