Precede l'opera una "Lettera del Petrarca" all'A.: il Poeta, con toni allarmati, deplora di essere "crocifisso mille volte al giorno" e con lui Boccaccio, Dante e Ariosto, dagli "anatomisti" delle loro opere, per cui (annunciando, per ufficializzare l'incarico, il prossimo invio dalle "verdi, e famose selve" dei Campi Elisi di una "procura in forma autentica"), implora dalla gentilezza dell'A. la stesura di una nuova edizione delle Osservationi, non solo contenente il "riporto de' numeri delle carte, e de' versi", bens aumentata di una spiegazione più esaustiva dei vari termini.
