Maurizio Cogliani traccia in apertura una biografia del compositore, basata su documenti inediti o rari, alcuni dei quali riprodotti nelle appendici. Anna Quaranta si sofferma poi sulla sua produzione cameristica, strumentale e vocale, con un capillare esame di carattere storico-stilistico che mette in evidenza tra l'altro il debito di Caggiano nei confronti di Brahms e in genere del grande repertorio tardoromantico; mentre Barbara Lazotti dedica varie riflessioni alla romanza vocale da camera a cavallo tra Otto e Novecento, fornendo un quadro di riferimento che integra le pagine dedicate alle liriche di Caggiano nel contributo precedente. Francesco Vizioli, il direttore d'orchestra che più di ogni altro si è distinto nella riproposta di partiture caggianiane, ne affronta infine l'opera sinfonica. Vizioli discute i problemi esecutivi che essa, pensata per organici strumentali di ampiezza straussiana, ancor oggi pone, sottolineandone le peculiarità di scrittura; i poemi sinfonici sono esaminati sullo sfondo della tradizione europea della musica a programma, con l'intento di mettere in luce la lucida consapevolezza di quella che, mutuando dal lessico della drammaturgia musicale un'espressione ben nota, si potrebbe definire la solita forma del poema sinfonico. La scelta di lettere e il catalogo completano la pubblicazione: che vorrebbe essere intesa come prosecuzione del lavoro di Carlo Vitali, e insieme come stimolo a nuove indagini su un musicista che sta lentamente cominciando ad occupare nella riflessione critica e nella coscienza del pubblico lo spazio che merita.
