This book chronicles the development of Italian theatre from its inception through the mid-1800s, providing insights into its major figures and themes. The author, a prominent critic and playwright, argues that despite being once a global leader, Italian theatre had begun to decline by the mid-19th century, hampered by a lack of ambition, originality, and adherence to theatrical rules. The book traces the attempts of notable playwrights including Goldoni, Alfieri, and Metastasio to elevate the art form, and examines the impact of foreign influence during the Romantic era. Through this detailed examination, the book offers a nuanced perspective on the evolution of Italian theatre and its enduring significance. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
