Soft cover. 1st Edition. 8vo., (8 x 4 6/8 inches). Fine large folding engraved map of the Niagara Frontier, and three wood-engravings in the text. Contemporary half calf, marbled boards (rebacked preserving the original spine). Provenance: with the near contemporary ownership inscription of "Himmis" at the head of the title-page…; with the small library label of Wolfgang A. Herz, on the front pastedown, his sale "Important Voyages and Travels", 9th December 2009, lot 269. First edition. Hall traveled up the Hudson to Albany and on to Canada where he visited Quebec, Montreal, Kingston, Niagara, and York before returning to the United States: "We were conveyed to Poughkeepsie in a kind of covered cart: the West-Point hills lay in a long ridge behind us, stretching east and west. The country through which we passed, though comparatively low, undulated in the same direction. About three miles from Fishkill a wild torrent rushed over its bed of broken rocks, across the road: The romantic bridge flung over its brawling course, the mill on its craggy banks, and the deep wooded glen, down which it hastens to the Hudson, deserve a place in every traveller's journal" (pages 26-27). Hall includes similar and brief descriptions of New York, Albany, Philadelphia, Washington, Mount Vernon, Harper's Ferry and the Shenandoah Valley, Monticello, Richmond, Charleston, and appends pieces on Slavery, and "the American Character", and the American Government and "System". Howes H62; Sabin 29769.
