A letter discussing a list of members and their autographs. Sir Francis Freeling, 1st Baronet 1764 - 1836, was Secretary of the General Post Office. He initiated many reforms to the Post Office, including the introduction of local penny posts in large towns, the reorganization of London's postal service and the use of steam trains and steamships to replace horse-drawn vehicles and wind-powered ships. Begins: 'My dear Sir, / Your Letter of yesterday I have just received & am exceedingly obliged to you for the communication it contains - it is quite distressing to see the delusion which prevails in the public mind on this subject -'. He is 'submitting the Extract of the Norwich paper sent by Mr. Coldwell (to whom we are much obliged) to the Governor & Deputy Governor', but does not wish to delay his thanks to Freeling.

Two pages, quarto. On slightly stained, aged paper, with a few closed tears and some wear to extremities. Black wax seal adhering to second leaf of bifolium. Docketed 'March 1814 | Manchester | Revd. R. H. Whitelocke', but the signature appears to read 'Whitelock'. He is sending 'the only Publication that has at present appeared in Print respecting the unfortunate Miss Robinson - The wretch who drove her to the fit of desperation has been desired for the Peace of the Town to quit it for the fury of the Populace is very great - & he did leave it for a few days but has had the effrontery to return. - I saw one of the Surgeons after the investigation who assured me that it was a most remarkable instance that there was every satisfactory proof of her virginity.' Recounts what the 'man in his Defence said'. His 'conduct deprived her of her reason'. He is sending Davies's Catalogues: 'there is nothing very scarce'. The news that the report of Louis XVIII's proclamation is unfounded is 'a woeful disappointment'. He hopes Freeling's son will write a few lines if anything extraordinary occurs. The British Library contains a pamphlet entitled 'Some Account of the Circumstances attendant on the Death of the late Miss Lavinia Robinson' (Manchester: Joseph Aston, 1814).

The letter is 3pp, 12mo, with underlinings in red pencil (probably by Freeling), and the reverse of the second leaf carrying the address and annotations by Freeling and Critchett. In good condition, lightly aged and worn, with folds for postage and strip of tape from mount adhering to reverse of second leaf, which also has a strip of paper with an ANS by Critchett laid down lengthwise along the outer edge. Tierney addresses himself to 'Sir Francis Freeling Bt' and signs 'M J Tierney'. Begins: 'My dear Sir Francis / The annexed letter has been returned to my house this morng - why I cannot understand as my Brother Mr Edward Tierney is & has been since Tuesday at my house 26 Bruton St / I wrote to him under a similar cover & address yesterday transmitting important papers, shtould that letter not have been delivered this morning in Bruton Street it will occasion great inconvenience indeed'. He speculates that error is due to the habit of the 'Postman in that district' of 'sending Letters addressed to me in town to this place', adding that 'he could not have called in Bruton St. yesterday'. He apologises for troubling Freeling, 'but I know of no other method by which the error could be rectified'. He ends by asking Freeling to direct the postman to deliver the letter to Bruton St. At the head of the last page: '5 Feb 1835 / Brighton / Sir M J Tierney'. Beneath this, in another hand, the letter is redirected to 'Sir Francis Freeling Bt.' Under this Freeling writes: 'This is unfortunate / Can Mr Critchett tell me whether the letter he alludes to was returned yesterday'. In yet another hand, beneath this: 'The enclosed Letter to be sent to Bruton Street immediately'. And at the foot of the page, in response to Freeling, Critchett writes: 'The Letter returned from Brighton was delivered yesterday with X', and continuing on the laid-down strip: 'an apology for the mistake and the letter from Sir M. Tierney to his Brother of the 4th. instant was duly delivered. I have seriously cautioned the letter carrier / B Critchett / 7 Feb 1835'. Image on requet.

(BINGHAM)', ending 'RICHARD, PRESENT AND SECOND EARL.' The other cutting, ffrom the Illustrated London News, is a biographical article headed 'MAJOR-GENERAL THE EARLOF LUCAN' and begins: 'IN this week's number of the ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS we present our readers with an admirable Portrait of Major-General the Earl of Lucan, appointed to command the cavalry division now in course of embarkation for the seat of war.'.

In good condition, lightly aged, with slight damage to one corner of first leaf, and thin strip of paper from mount adhering to reverse of second leaf, which is franked 'Kent & Strathearn', with postmark, and addressed to 'Francis Freeling Esquire | &c &c &c | Genl. Post Office | Lombard Street | London'. Folded four times. The letter begins: 'Dear Sir | It being of some consequence that the enclosed should reach Germany in safety, as it contains the notification of a young M an's appointment to a Commission in the British Service, whose unfortunate parents are very little able to maintain him, I shall esteem it a very particular favor if through your good offices, and the medium of our Agent at Toninghen this can be accomplished'. He knows Freeling will do his 'best endeavours to effect the thing if it is possible', and adds, 'that the letter is written as ever if opened not to be of any consequence, and therefore if sent by a private hand not liable to expose the Bearer to anything unpleasant in consequence'. From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.
