"Alvaric Verne was on safari in the heart of Africa when he received a letter written six months earlier. Informed that his uncle and cousin had been killed in a carriage accident, Verne is summoned to England to assume his title as the 11th Lord Verhnam. When Verne arrives in the spring of 1825 he discovers that the duties attending his title are more than he anticipated. His relatives had sold the family treasures acquired through the centuries and mortgaged the estate to support their gambling, wine, and women. Verhnam Abbey is dilapidated and empty, the lands and farms in ruin. Theobold Muir, a multimillionaire neighbor, is the new owner of the treasures and holds the notes. A letter to a wife marking the death of her husband and reminisces about him. On Governor of Malta headed paper. Field Marshal Francis Wallace Grenfell, 1st Baron Grenfell, 1841-1925 was a British Army officer. After serving as aide-de-camp to the Commander-in-Chief, South Africa, he fought in the 9th Xhosa War, the Anglo-Zulu War and then the Anglo-Egyptian War. He went on to become Sirdar (Commander-in-Chief) of the Egyptian Army and commanded the forces at the Battle of Suakin in December 1888 and at the Battle of Toski in August 1889 during the Mahdist War. After that he became Governor of Malta and then Commander-in-Chief, Ireland before retiring in 1908. Size is 200mm x 125mm. Condition is good. Light folding creasing. Age toning marks.
