Collaborators : Manuel Puig, Alberto Girri, Olga Orozco, Alejandra Pizarnik, Gerardo Diego, Santiago Kovadloff, Jorge Sanchez, Jorge Asis, Marco Denevi, Ana Maria Shua, Pompeyo Camps, Among others. In June 1980, a new literary magazine appeared: La Torre de Papel. Bimonthly book magazine of literature, science, art and philosophy. Mario Ferdman and Francisco Herrera were its directors. Years before, both had belonged to the Editorial Committee of La Gaceta Literaria (1956-1971), directed by Pedro Orgambide and Roberto Hosne. Its makers wondered, first of all, how to present a new venture without assuming a bombastic tone and making clear the sense of editing a new publication. Two feelings were made explicit as a letter of introduction: pleasure and desire; In the midst of the military dictatorship, appealing to such passions was quite a bet. And being, also, an element of cultural revitalization in the ailing publishing scene: in recent years almost all the small publishing houses and a good part of the medium ones have disappeared from the market; the economic situation of the big companies is not flourishing . This book magazine, which mentions Sur and Ficción as antecedents, seeks to fill that vacancy. The appeal is to spaciousness and eclecticism. Its title plays with the other tower, that of Babel, to also connect the dots with the idea of the all-encompassing, the broad, the polyglot. The only two numbers published - the second came out in November 1980 - are proof of this. Its Committee of collaborators and published authors include Jorge Asís, Jorge Luis Borges, Silvina Bullrich, Adolfo Bioy Casares, Osiris Chiérico, Jorge Couselo, Marco Denevi, Hellen Ferro, Juan Carlos Ghiano, Jorge Boccanera, Luis Franco, Alejandra Pizarnik, Beatriz Guido, Luis Gusmán, Eduardo Gudiño Kieffer, Bernardo Kordon, Jorge Lafforgue, Héctor Lastra, Enrique Medina, Marta Lynch, Silvina Ocampo, Juan Carlos Onetti, Luis Ordaz, Enrique Pezzoni, Augusto Roa Bastos, Dalmiro Sáenz, Héctor Yánover, Daniel Freidemberg, Beatriz Sarlo, among others. It is worth highlighting the inclusion of poems by René Char, essays by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, Phillipe Sollers and Thomas Wolfe. The collaborations were organized in fixed sections, also organized in a heterogeneous way. Among the correspondents abroad, Juana Bignozzi appears, in Barcelona; Jorge Masciángioli, in Madrid and in Mexico, Amelia Dos Santos. Within a modest visual proposal, typical of the format it had chosen, La Torre de Papel was concerned with inserting small clichés or signed illustrations in its design to give some air to a motley typeface, which in the bibliographic section challenged, with minimal spacing and in a very small body, the visual acuity of its readers. Heir to a previous cultural company, the magazine "Hoy en la Cultura" was born in November 1961 and since then, it publishes 29 issues over five years until its definitive closure in July 1966. Pedro Orgambide is with Raúl Larra and David Viñas, the promoter of the new venture, thought from the editorial that opens its number 1 as a meeting place for "the diverse progressive currents of thought and art in Argentina" ("Editorial, 1961), the magazine accommodates to the cultural controversy, at the same time that it feels position regarding both the national and world political events, as well as the cultural guidelines set by the Argentine governments that took place during the 1960s. In abstraction from its defined political orientation, we can affirm that Hoy en la cultura is a vigilant thermometer of our cultural temperature; alert, agile, controversial, is already, without a doubt, an important document of our incessant will to integrate the profile of a community.
