Værkerne består - i princippet - af to elementer: Et figurativt motiv, der synes at angive betydninger som sanselighed, magt, hengivelse, fordømmelse, begær, gru, lidelse, ømhed, hævn, kønsforhold, ydmygelse, religiøsitet, sex, forgængelighed, lyst, heroisme, straf, ensomhed, beruselse, angst, tvivl, melankoli, skønhed, vold, illusionsløshed - livet, døden og kærligheden - kort sagt hardcore-patos af enhver art. Ser "man kun denne betydningsgivende side af Frandsens værk, repræsenterer det i ganske traditionel forstand en romantisk, ekspressionistisk emnekreds. Disse betydninger ledsages af det, Frandsen selv kalder blokader. Det vil sige: Kitsch, banale genstande, vulgariteter, ready-mades, tomme, abstrakte flader, ligegyldige, serielle gentagelser, tegneserie- og massemedie-klicheer, summarisk tegnede markører, billedsproglige konventioner, platheder, skematiske allegorier o.s.v. Frandsens motiver angiver altså betydninger, der enten opløses, hanes, ironiseres, modarbejdes, betvivles eller i det mindste i hvert tilfælde anfægtes af blokaderne.
