Decorative Cloth. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st W. H. Allen Edition. Hardback. My Life and Loves. Previous owners name to inside cover. Slight foxing to end inside covers and edge. Brown cloth with gilt decoration and lettering. Had Frank Harris died in 1914 - he was then about sixty years of age - he would be known to us first as the incomparable editor of the Saturday Review and friend of Oscar Wilde, and then as a writer. We would grant him his position in fin-de-siecle London, the London that was 'dying into a dance,/An agony of trance', and we would enjoy his moral and social eccentricities, much as we do those of Swinbourne, Whistler, and Wilde. We would be amused by his ragsd to riches story and we would like his standing up to Cecil Rhodes and the British government in support of the Boers. His last public act would have been a brave one - going to Brixton Prison in the cause of a free pass. His tidy legacy of short stories and his great biography of Wilde would have kept his memory alive. But the memory of Frank Harris, insofar as it now exists, is drawn from his last fifteen years, and it comes to most of us second-hand. His books have been out of print in England and American for almost thirty years. 983 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. 1st Edition. New York, Grove, 1966. First edition. First printing. Hardbound in slipcase. Both volumes, very good in a very good jacket. Slipcase near fine, some slight rubbing. A clean tight set. Book are tight, bright, unmarked, a couple of small spots on fore-edge, pages clean. The jacket is clean with small tears and slight bumping to crown. 8vo. Ixiii+2359pp., pagination continuous. Introduction by Gershon Legman. The first complete and public reprint of this classic Victorian erotic autobiography, penned between approximately 1883 and 1895 by an Englishman of means. In the USA it was finally published without censorship in 1966 by Grove Press, but in 1969 a British printer, Arthur Dobson, was sentenced to two years' prison for producing a UK reprint. The identity of "Walter" is unknown. The most commonly suggested author is Henry Spencer Ashbee (1834 1900). He was a book collector, writer, and bibliographer and, from the three volumes he published under his pseudonym Pisanus Fraxi, the expert on erotic books in his day. Gershon Legman was the first to link "Walter" and Ashbee, in his introduction to the 1962 reprints of Ashbee's bibliographies, and the 1966 Grove Press edition of My Secret Life included an expanded version of that essay.

Paperback. Condizione: Good. First Edition. pp. 80. "Although paintings by members of the Group of Seven have been included in all major exhibitions of Canadian painting, there has been only one important exhibition devoted exclusively to their work since 1933, when the Group of Seven was merged into the larger Canadian Group of Painters: this was held at the National Gallery of Canada in 1936. The present exhibition, then, may be regarded as the second such survey. It differs from the first by the addition of works by Franz Johnston, who was a member of the Group for a short time, and Tom Thomson, who was never a member, but who has been included in this exhibition on grounds of style and association. This is certainly the first time that any major collection of the work of the Group of Seven has been seen in Vancouver." - Introduction. Includes article by Lawren Harris entitled "The Story of the Group of Seven" and an article by R.H. Hubbard entitled "The National Movement in Canadian Painting". Catalogue proper begins on page 19 and includes colour and black and white reproductions of thirty-one works. Unmarked with moderate wear. 23 x 15cm. Lerner & Williamson 1747 Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Group of Seven, Tom Thomson, Franz Johnston, F.H. Varley, A.Y. Jackson, Lawren Harris, Arthur Lismer, J.E.H. MacDonald, Frank Carmichael, Lionel Fitzgerald, Edwin Holgate (illustratore). Stapled Booklet.
