Leather Bound. Condizione: Very Good. In Latin. 1608 first edition 'Coloniae Agrippinae sumptibus Bernardi Gualteri' (Cologne, Germany) 4 x 7 1/4 inches tall full leather bound, three raised bands to spine, [14], 672, [3] pp. Lacking original endpapers, but otherwise a complete copy. Covers have extremely mild edgewear. Faded contemporaneous owner name to title page, which is soiled, especially to margins. Faded contemporaneous ink marginalia, mainly tic marks to the margins to a majority of pages, as well as a numbering of Sweerts's 80 listed sources. Scattered soiling and foxing. Otherwise, a very good copy of a scarce first edition of this important early compilation of epigraphs. ~LLL~ A compilation of epigraphs and inscriptions collected from across the European Christian world by Belgian historian and epigraphist Franz Sweerts (1567-1629), also known as Pierre Francois Sweerts (Latinized as Sweertius Franciscus). In this work, following in the footsteps of Nathan Chytraeus (1543-1598), who published in 1594 what was arguably the 'first world-corpus of classical inscriptions,' Sweerts, like Chytraeus, was only a compiler. Sweerts admits making free use of Chytraeus, Lorenz Schrader and Tobias Fendt, who are among the eighty authorities to whom he explicitly acknowledges his indebtedness in the first few pages of this book. Sweerts indicates that he put together this collection strictly for the pleasure of the reader. 'People who like only old inscriptions,' Sweerts says, 'can betake themselves to Apianus and Amantius, to Smetius and Scaliger, to Velserus and Groter and Justus Lipsius,' where, he adds, 'they will be lucky if they find anything as delightful as the inscriptions produced by contemporary composers.' [Translation from John Sparrow, 'Visible Words: A Study of Inscriptions In and As Books and Works of Art' (Cambridge University Press 1969), at p. 32.] A second and enlarged edition of Sweerts's 'Deliciae,' dedicated to Cardinal Francesco Barberini, nephew of Pope Urban VIII, appeared in 1625. Sweerts also produced 'Epitaphia Ioco-Seria' (Cologne 1623, 1645) and 'Monumenta Sepulchralia et Inscriptiones Publicae Privatacque Ducatus Brabantiae' (Antwerp 1613). Epigraphy is the study of inscriptions or epigraphs as writing; it is the science of identifying graphemes, clarifying their meanings, classifying their uses according to dates and cultural contexts, and drawing conclusions about the writing and the writers.

Later edition of Sylvius? most important works in which he explained that digestion is a result of the chemical reactions of acids and bases coming from pancreatic, stomach, and saliva secretions Franciscus Sylvius (1614 ? 1672) was a Dutch physician, chemist, physiologist and anatomist) who was an early champion of Descartes', Van Helmont's and William Harvey's work and theories. He was one of the earliest defenders of the theory of circulation of the blood in the Netherlands ?In 1658, after extended negotiations, Sylvius was persuaded to accept appointment as professor of medicine at Leiden at the high salary of 1,800 guilders?almost twice the usual amount. On 17 September 1658 he delivered his inaugural oration, on the knowledge of man, De hominis cognitione. Although as a rule bedside teaching was limited to two days a week, Sylvius received permission to take his students daily to the hospital, where he performed the autopsies himself. His own ideas on several medical subjects were defended by his students in public disputations, and in 1669?1670 he was vicechancellor of the university. The first volume of his main work, Praxeos medicae ida nova, was published the following year, but he did not live to see the second volume in print.? (DSB) Garrison & Morton 2197.
