The first edition of this very scarce work.The collected letters of Augustus Simon Frazer, containing a total of 181 letters, penned between 1812 to 1815.Frazer commanded the artiller…y at the British invasions of the Rio de la Plata in 1807, and as part of Wellington's staff during both the Peninsular War and the Waterloo Campaign.Illustrated with a frontispiece, one folding map, and two maps.Collated, complete.Edited by Major-General Edward Sabine, who also served in the Peninsular War. He was also a noted ornithologist, and was the 30th president of the Royal Society.Twenty-six pages of publisher's adverts to the rear. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Spine is a little faded. Very light rubbing and marks to the cloth. Hinges are starting but firm. Bookseller's label to the rear paste down. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with a few scattered spots. Gift inscription to the half-title. Very Good. Besides his 140 letters written during the Peninsular Campaign, there were 40 written during his time at Waterloo. In addition, there are three maps of Portugal, St. Sebastian region and the parts touching Spain and France. The…re are a number of letters that show the progress at Waterloo, so in a letter of June 15, as commander of the Royal Horse Artillery, he is asked at 10 PM to began moving. All of this was complicated by the reorganization on the run of units as numbers fell and others were incorporated into the battle formation. As they approached Waterloo, for the first time, they were almost fully reorganized and as he look out upon his troops, he notes "they made a noble appearance".A very good copy bound in a beautiful 3/4 red morocco over red cloth, raised bands with compartments lettered and decoratively stamped in gilt, some tanning to page edges, housed within cloth covered slipcase with original gilt cloth depicting a cannon centrally mounted. Very nice.
