A memoir of outdoorsman and the 26th President of the United States Theodore Roosevelt (1858 - 1919) recounting ranching days in the Badlands of Dakota Territory in the mid-1880s. In 1884 Roosevelt's his first wife, Alice Lee Roosevelt, and his mother died on the same day. Roosevelt withdrew for the next two years to the home ranch which straddled both sides of the twisting Little Missouri and lived in a low house of hewn logs. There he lived in the saddle, driving cattle, hunting big game, and found healing. Beautifully illustrated with 65 b/w illustrations by Frederic Remington (1861 - 1909) who enjoyed a close bond with Roosevelt through their shared love for adventure and the great outdoors. The narrative is a vivid portrait of a bygone way of life permeated with the thrill of the roundup, Indian encounters, hunting bighorn sheep, bronco busting, and much more. Frederic Remington also produced sculptures in bronze reflecting the same subjects. Beautifully illustrated in colour, some black and white representations in the text. Just prior to the Bronzes there is a full page picture on greenish card of a cowboy on a bucking bronco all in gold (very striking) .
