Both Dixon and Meares commanded trading vessels in the early days of maritime fur trade; both arrived for the first time on the N. W. Coast of America in the summer of 1786, and both made numerous discoveries during their expeditions in that area. In 1790, Meares published his triumphant 'Voyages,' in which he recalled his involvement in the 'Nootka Sound Controversy' and boasted of his exploratory ventures in North America. Dixon contended that this account was largely false and that Meares had claimed credit which rightly belonged to others. Howay's synthesis of this bitter controversy includes Dixon's 'Remarks on the Voyages of John Meares,' Meares' refutation of these charges, and Dixon's 'Further Remarks on the Voyages of John Meares . This book chronicles the formation, arrival, and contributions of the Royal Engineers, a distinguished corps of the British Army, to the establishment and development of British Columbia, Canada. The deployment of this highly skilled and versatile group in 1858 was a pivotal moment in the colony's history, marking the beginning of extensive infrastructure and resource development projects. The Royal Engineers' exceptional talents in engineering, surveying, exploration, and military service were instrumental in laying the groundwork for the province's future prosperity. Their work included building roads, bridges, and public buildings, conducting surveys and explorations to facilitate settlement and commerce, and maintaining law and order during a period of rapid growth. By examining the Royal Engineers' experiences and achievements, this book sheds light on the crucial role of infrastructure, exploration, and military support in shaping the history of British Columbia and other frontier regions. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
