Gunn, Robert D. and Nichols, Frederick D. (illustratore). 249 pages, plus 2-page errata (corrigenda) bound in at rear. Hardcover; rebound with yellow and green decorative pattern front and rear covers from the original red cover. First edition; no dust jacket. Minor staining, ink and pen marks, and a significant tear on last page; tight binding. EX LIBRIS. Published by Historic Savannah Foundation in 1968 and regarded as a seminal work on the architecture of Savannah, Georgia. Each ward has an illustrated layout of its streets, with the placement of individual buildings. Chapters on Savannah's architectural history detail the development and built environment of the downtown National Historic Landmark district. This book explores the city's origins, the evolution of its architecture through different periods, and the significance of its unique squares and street pattern. The introduction was written by Carl Feiss, F.A.I.A., A.I.P. Of special note is Chapter 3, which lists and illustrates the 56 buildings and structures documented by the Historic American Building Survey (HABS), including the 13 demolished prior to publication. This is the first edition; a second edition was released in 1977 and a third in 2005.
