Aggiungi al carrelloThe present item is producer Hugh Burnett's own copy, from his papers, of the transcript of John Freeman's interview with Harding, broadcast in the groundbreaking BBC television series 'Face to Face' on 18 September 1960, a few weeks before Harding's death on 16 November 1960. Harding's entry in the Oxford DNB states that, 'in r…adio programmes such as The Brains Trust and Twenty Questions, and on television in What's my Line?, Harding became a great popular figure, especially of television in which he was probably the best-known performer in the country. He was a man under great emotional pressure, something of which was revealed in his Face to Face interview with John Freeman on BBC television in September 1960'. In what was one of the best-remembered interviews in the series Harding was reduced to tears by Freeman's line of questioning, which would appear to have brought up his feelings over the death of his mother. See also Freeman's entry in the Oxford DNB. The present single-spaced typed transcript was produced for inclusion in Burnett's book 'Face to Face / Edited and introduced by Hugh Burnett' (London: Jonathan Cape, 1964), and is marked up with printing instructions in pencil and red ink, with a few proof corrections in pencil. 3pp, foolscap 8vo, on three leaves, the first two of which are stapled together. In good condition, lightly aged. 'I'm profoundly lonely', Harding declares. He discusses his career as a teacher ('I terrified the little boys - either by shouting or looking terrible.'), time as a policeman ('I didn't like the helmet.'), fondness for 'life in big institutions' ('I've often thought I'd like to join a monastery, but then I'd have to behave myself much more than I'm able to do.'), inclination towards bullying ('It is rather pleasant to have people jumping about - only every now and then!'), thoughts about pain and death, enemies, ('I didn't like my sister very much.') and mother ('My mother was always a sort of comforting and on the whole rather over-ready source of assuagement and there was always a sort of bosom to cry on. She had a sort of patient smile and resigned shrugging of shoulders, as much as to say, well, I shall never understand you but I suppose you know what you're doing - a rather tired and weary woman.').

The single-spaced typed transcript was produced for inclusion in Burnett's book 'Face to Face / Edited and introduce…d by Hugh Burnett' (London: Jonathan Cape, 1964), and is marked up with printing instructions in pencil and red ink, with a few proof corrections in pencil and green ink. 2pp, foolscap 8vo, on two leaves. An interesting interview, with Stevenson beginning by downplaying his political roots. He describes his father as 'a professional farmer. By this I mean to say he managed farms throughout central Illinois, and my grandfather was a newspaper proprietor. My other grandfather was a politician and lawyer. My Stevenson ancestor was a democratic politician. My mother's family were republican newspaper publishers.' He describes his youth ('I always contrived to get in fights quicker than anybody in my neighbourhood. On the whole I lost them. That's pursued me ever since.'), his desire to be 'a rancher in Wyoming', his time in Italy during the war, his belief that it is 'intolerable' that Americans should wish to have nothing to do with politics ('The best reason I can think of for not running for President is you have to shave twice a day. I've had to do that twice, and that's enough.').

This single-spaced typed transcript was produced for inclusion in Burnett's book 'Face to Face / Edited and introduced by Hu…gh Burnett' (London: Jonathan Cape, 1964), and is marked up with printing instructions in pencil and red ink, with a few proof corrections in green ink. 3pp, foolscap 8vo, on three leaves stapled together. In fair condition, lightly aged, with a few pin holes at top right of the leaves. An energetic, zesty interview. 'I'm a Welshman', John declares, 'a bad Welshman'. A passage regarding John's childhood conveys the general tone: 'I can remember one thing in an early school in Tenby. I'd practically idolized one of the masters, as schoolboys are apt to do, I think, and he betrayed me and held me up before the whole school, denounced me as a liar, d'you see, and the fact was I was completely innocent. I made a mistake, I know, a formal matter, but instead of protesting I succumbed before the class. I never forgave that man and I'm very glad to be able to report that soon after he blew his brains out, you see - in a railway train. I think I must have put something on him.' Further on he describes his affinity with gypsies: 'I was told to avoid them, by my nurses. I was always fascinated by them as a child, seeing them in the markets at Haverfordwest, strange foreign people. And then when I got to Liverpool I fell in with a great friend we made, John Samson, who was a student of Romany, and we went about a lot together. There I learnt the fine dialect spoken by one tribe in the north.' There are two interesting deletions. First, John's identification of the hospital at which his first wife died in France as being in the 'Boulevard Arago' has been scored through in black ink. Second, the passage 'Oh you got it from there? I thought I'd disguised it sufficiently.' has been typed through with crosses before the passage 'Certainly I'm interested in women. In beauty, I should think. If it's beauty, it's love. In my case! You've got to get excited before you can do anything, and beauty is a great excitant.'.

Duplicated typescript. 4pp, foolscap 8vo. Numbered, and headed 'CECIL BEATON', otherwise consisting entirely of the transcript, with no other deta…ils. Aged and worn, with punch holes for binder. On four leaves which were originally stapled together, but with the first and last leaves now detached. Page references 1-10 (presumably to a shorthand transcript) in the outer margin. The present transcript was prepared for Burnett's book 'Face to Face | Edited and introduced by Hugh Burnett' (London: Jonathan Cape, 1964), but it includes several passages omitted from the version printed on pp.38-40 of that work. For example, the very first paragraph here is not present in the published version: 'I was very slow in finding a vocation, and I think I took the shortest cut in every direction. I wouldn't say that yet I know which is my real vocation . . . . . . There's an enormous amount of hazard in what I do. A whole lot of theatre jobs might come in succession, or perhaps writing jobs, I can never say, "Well, I'm going to spend March and April, doing one sort of job, and then switch."' Other omitted topics are: lack of 'complete satisfaction' in his work; his 'well-off' chilhood and his difficult relationship with his father ('He was a great cricketer, [] but intuitively I went against many of the things that he stood for, and liked.'); how he was 'most objectionable' once he had 'discovered what I was about'; his father's business difficulties; his 'bizarre style of dress' and his diaries: 'I really looked upon my diaries from a technical point of view. I came across this board and I started reading them, and I was appalled by the person that was revealed there. But suddenly there would be a little patch that I thought had great vitality, that still seemed to be valid. So I collected them together, and even if I came out of them in a pretty unbecoming light, and I thought they were interesting, then I let them go in.'.

Headed 'JOMO KENYATTA', otherwise consisting entirely of the transcript, with no other details. Marked up with instructions to the typesetter in pencil and red and green ink, and corresponding to the text as printed on p.15 of Burnett's book. In fair condition, aged and worn. Kenyatta responds in a forthright fashion to Freeman's probing, as for example: 'We don't want to rob anybody of his property. [] what we want to get is power, that is, the government. [] We want help from those who can give us help. [] Those who want to be masters must find somewhere else, because what we want is friends to help us. Those who can help us, but masters no. We have no place for them.'.

Aggiungi al carrelloThis is the transcript of John Freeman's celebrated interview of Evelyn Waugh, broadcast in the BBC series 'Face to Face' on 26 June 1960. The Waugh interview is not among those which feature in Burnett's book 'Face to Face' (Jonathan Cape, 1964) and has never been published. Waugh was apprehensive about the interview, writing b…eforehand to his friend Tom Driberg, who knew Freeman from his time as a fellow Labour MP: 'I have let myself in for cross-examination on Television by a man named Major Freeman who I am told was a colleague of yours in the Working Class Movement. Do you know anything damaging about him that I can introduce into our conversation if he becomes insolent?' Freeman was aware, from the start, of the 'rehearsed antagonistic attitude' that Waugh was 'going to take to the interviewer', and during the course of the interview he found him 'very difficult [.] very uptight; I think he disliked me and whether he did or not he was extremely nervous.' (In contrast Burnett, in his introduction to the 1964 book, numbers Waugh among the interviewees who 'far from shrinking from the probe [] seemed to enjoy the experience'.) Looking back Freeman considered the interview 'an important one, really because this man in my judgement is one of the unquestionably great writers of this century, and I attached enormous importance to trying to make some sort of relation if I could between his work and Waugh as a human being. [] of all the people on the list of Face to Faces he is the one whom I think I hold in most honour.' The present transcript is a duplicated typescript, 13pp., foolscap 8vo. Paginated 1-13. First page headed: 'EVELYN WAUGH | FACE TO FACE | with | John Freeman | Produced by Hugh Burnett | tv 26.6.60'. 'HMB' (initials of transcriber?) at foot of last page. On thirteen leaves stapled together. In fair condition, lightly aged, with last leaf detached. The transcript contains eight substantial passages which are not present in the only version of the broadcast interview at present available. (That version is a little over 26 minutes long, and it seems unlikely that the original, broadcast between 9.40 and 10.10, can have been cut down.) The first passage is Waugh's ten-line response to Freeman's question 'What's your earliest memory of a [sic] family home? | WAUGH: Well, my father built a little house on a plot of land in what is now entirely obliterated, but it's hard to believe that fifty-six years ago there was a village called North End, Hampstead, a little hamlet absolutely rural village within five miles of London. That's where he settled. It was quite distinct from Hamptsead and had a village pub, famous in song called the Bull and Bush, a little village shop and post-office combined, it had a dairy farm and the dairyman who sold his old milk, a lady of the manor entirely like an English rural village now. | Does that house still stand? | I don't know. I should think not. The whole place has been obliterated and Golders Green has grown up, you know, from the bottom of the hill.' In the second passage Waugh discusses the merits of a large family. In the third he recalls that at school 'we were rather strictly brought up and severely punished. . . . . all this talk now about whether beating's a deterrent the one thing which one could do at school which one wasn't beaten for was Corps offences. They generally imposed military punishments which were very negligible, like defaulters' parade, so that all our high spirits used to be concentrated on making the Corps ridiculous.' In the fourth Waugh recalls his youthful loss of faith: 'I remember I was sacristan and I and a fellow sacristan who is now a member of your party [Tom Driberg?] . . . . . . . were folding up some sort of surplice or vestment or something and I revealed to him, in secret, while we were doing this the fact that there was no God, and he was much shocked and he said "if you think that you've got no business to touch this chasuble" - or wh.
