Aggiungi al carrello8vo. Together 3 pp. Both to a clergyman and fellow member of the Académie Française, very likely to be Henri Bremond. In the earlier letter, Hanotaux thanks the recipient for a brochure and talks about the relevance of old research, mentioning a "Rue Royale" and that "Sicily is an invention of professors", comparing it to speculations about the pyramids. In the second part of the letter, he mentions mutual friends including the journalist and critic André Hallays and the journalist and novelist Louis d'Illiers. - In the letter from October, Hantaux announces his return to Paris and promises that he will forward a letter by the recipient concerning a Louis Chaminade from Pons (Charente-Maritime) to the secretariat of both the Institut de France and the Académie Française and recommend Chaminade.

Aggiungi al carrelloDiplomat. Three pages, 4to, poor condition but most of the text legible. "Private". Rumbold discusses the reception of a petition he sent to "Mr Fen[?]" saying that he is to get "immediate indemnification for the losses & expenses occasioned by the seizure of my Person, my imprisonment &c". Vincent is giving him support. He encloses his account, anticipates delay by the Treasury in paying but enlists his correspondent's help. His case was a cause celebre of the time, described in DNB as follows: "On the night of 25 Oct. 1804 a detachment of two hundred and fifty French troops landed in boats on the Hamburg Berg, proceeded to the Grindel, Rumbold's country residence, forced the door, and compelled him to deliver up his papers. He was then carried to Hanover in a guarded coach, and thence to Paris. After a day's confinement in the Temple, he was conveyed to Cherbourg, and put on board a French cutter sailing under flag of truce. By this vessel he was delivered to the English frigate Niobe, in which he arrived at Portsmouth. The order for Rumbold's arrest came direct from Fouché in Paris, and was addressed to Marshal Bernadotte. Fouché's despatch charged Rumbold with having avowed a plan of conspiracy, and directed that he should be treated as any other Englishman 'who should adopt criminal practices.' In Berlin great indignation was expressed, and the Prussian minister at Paris was ordered, in demanding Rumbold's release, to apply for his own passports in case of delay or evasion. An autograph letter of Napoleon promised compliance with the demand. Rumbold was replaced at Hamburg in 1806. He died of fever at Memel on 15 Dec. 1807." See Image.

Aggiungi al carrello8vo. 1 p. on bifolium. Interesting letter to a fellow member of the Institut de France, concerning the costs of the Hôtel Spoelberch de Lovenjoul in Chantilly that housed the library of the Institut between 1910 and 1987, following the legacy of the important library of the Belgian collector Charles de Spoelberch de Lovenjoul (1836-1907). There are two likely recipients of the letter: Eugène Gilbert, the executor of Lovenjoul's last will and Georges Vicaire, the custodian of the new library who had been appointed based on Hanotaux's suggestion. In any case, Hanontaux agreed to the suggested "cost allocation for the building". - Well preserved.

J'ai lu par ailleurs la note sur Negrelli, que vous avez bien voulu m'adresser joint à votre lettre. Je connais bien la controverse à laquelle il y est fait allusion. Aggiungi al carrello8vo (135 x 180 mm). 2 pp. on bifolium. A letter from the Romanian diplomat and woman of letters, at the time her country's permanent delegate to the League of Nations, to a friend, apparently a diplomatic colleague. Signed under the francisised form of her name. - V c rescu states that she is saddened by the news her correspondent has given her, but advises him that "Aristide sera á Paris le 1er Février - c'est á lui que vous présenterez votre démission". This presumably refers to Aristide Briand (1862-1932), at that point the French foreign minister. - The daughter of Wallachian nobility, Elena V c rescu lived in France after being exiled from Romania due to an impermissible romantic relationship with the future king, Ferdinand I (r. 1914-27), in 1889. Nonetheless, she spent most of her life in the diplomatic service of her native country. Before her exile, Queen Elizabeth of Romania (r. 1881-1914) was impressed by the young woman's literary achievements and took her under her wing. It was at court that she met Ferdinand, but as the Romanian Constitution of 1866 forbade the heir to the throne to marry a Romanian, the two were forcibly separated. - V c rescu represented Romania at the League of Nations from 1921 to 1938, the only woman to have served as a Permanent Delegate in the history of the institution. Her literary output, mainly in French and comprising plays, poetry and novels, twice made her a laureate of the Académie française. - A glimpse into the international world of the interwar period from one of the few prominent women on the diplomatic stage. - Creased from folding, light even browning. Surfaces clean and neat.

Aggiungi al carrello4to (184 x 234 mm). 2 pp. Autograph letter signed, dated 13 Fructidor XII on the official letterhead of the Sénat Conservateur, to Claude Ambroise Régnier (1746-1814), Chief Judge and Minister of Justice. Barthélemy requests Régnier to turn his attention to the case of a Monsieur Vallin, from Dormans in the Département de la Marne, who had been nominated to be a justice of the peace, but not yet installed in office due to a series of events. The senator encloses a letter from Vallin explaining the error, and assures the minister that "mon intérêt pour lui est fondé sur ma liaison intime avec lui depuis notre jeunesse et sur la connoissance que j'ai vu toutes ses excellentes qualités". - François Barthélemy was a career politician par excellence, whose trajectory spanned the ancien régime through the revolutionary and Napoleonic periods to the restoration of the Monarchy. He was a member of the Directorate in 1797, but due to his conservative sympathies he found himself exiled to Cayenne, which he escaped by fleeing to Suriname and thence to England. After Napoleon's coup d'état of 18 Brumaire in 1799, he returned to France and was made a member of the Sénat Conservateur, one of the chief governing bodies of the Napoleonic regime. From 1808 he was a Count of the Empire. Following the fall of Napoleon, he was among the commissaires charged by Louis XVIII with drafting a new monarchical constitution for France, and was subsequently granted the title of Marquis. - Régnier similarly made his political career under Napoleon, serving as Chief Judge and Minister of Justice from 1802 to 1813, during which period he was one of the main editors of the Napoleonic Code. - Barely three months before this letter was written (28 Floréal XII, 18 May 1804), the Sénat Conservateur had granted Napoleon the title of Emperor, ushering in the transition from the Consulate to the Empire. This letter of recommendation between two major political figures gives us an insight into the internal workings of French government in the era of Napoleonic ascendancy. - Some prickings, light creasing and browning, ink has bled through somewhat from writing on reverse, edges largely neat, writing and signature clear and legible, overall a handsome letter.

Talleyrand signs the letter in the absence of the Minister of the Navy and Colonies. Dated in the Revolutionary calendar "le 26 Germinal, an 7 de la République une et indivisible". The striking letterhead shows Marianne, the personification of the Republic, standing on a ship and holding a trident under the words "Liberté des Mers". - An attractive document showing the workings of the French Revolutionary government in the last months of the Directorate, before Napoleon's coup d'état later the same year, in which Talleyrand was instrumental. - Folded, some minor soiling in accordance with age, a clear and attractive piece.

Rare large scale map of the South American Highlands of Bolivia, Argentina, Chile and Peru, compiled by Victor Huot as part of a comprehensive study of the region by the Scientific Mission of G. de Créqui-Montfort and E. Sénéchal de la Grange. The map was drawn from a series of scientific expeditions in South America, mainly in to the Andes, made at the beginning of this century, on various subjects, including cartography, orography, physical anthropology, linguistics, fauna, paleontology, etc. South American Highlands Regions (Bolivia, Argentina, Chile, Peru) Traveled by the French Mission - Map Prepared by V. Huot from the Works of the Members of the Mission, the The following quote appeared in the Journal de la Societe des Americanistes de Paris (Nouvelle Series, Volume II, 1903, at page 346). A French scientific map of South America. - So far, the cartography of the Bolivian region of the Andes is quite poor. For Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, Chile, the general maps are still incomplete, even embryonic, but on the whole, quite satisfactory. For the Bolivian territory, no serious cartographic work exists to our knowledge. The maps of Ondarza, Reck, Muchin, Moreno, Idiaquez, Pando are more or less official publications, but all their documentation is based on information communicated by the local administrators. And, unless we are mistaken, very few of the cartographers knew first-hand the terrain represented. The recently published map of the Créqui Montfort-E. Sénéchal de la Grange Mission fills a signifiicant gap, it is more than simply and improvement, it is a foundational map, it will be a solid starting point and will serve as a basis for all future studies. Thanks to this map, for the first time, we can grasp, in outline, the topographic anatomy of these high Bolivian plateaus which constitute a region so original and so distinct. The map of the French Mission, besides the high plateau of Bolivia, that is to say all the Republic of Bolivia (minus the plains of Beni and Chaco), also offers us the Peruvian departments of Arequipa, Puno and Moquegua, the Chilean provinces of Tacna, Tarapaca and Antofagasta. It includes, in addition, the territory of Argentina, the province of Jujuy, part of that of Salta and the Argentine national territory of the Andes. In short, it shows all the high plateau of South America from 15 ° to 26 ° lat. S., in a developed format (1m 70> <1m 30). The Bolivian provinces of Lipez, Chichas, and Porco, left almost blank by the old maps, appear here in all the reality of their relief, delineated with the greatest care. For the departments of Arequipa and Moquegua, for the provinces of Jujuy and Salta, the French map also introduces important new detail . This is a beautiful work that honors its creators and authors, well served, the rest, for the translation of their observations and statements, by the talent of the draftsman, Mr. Victor Huot. It is a masterful preface to the great publications of archeology and ethnography promised by the Count de Créqui Montfort and eagerly awaited by all the Americanists. Ministry of Public Instruction.
